2011 is officially over which means we're in for a whole slew of new games starting February, so why not spend a bit of time remembering some of the stand out characters of this past year. Of course we couldn't include everyone, but we did our best to include the essentials.
There's a little bit of Dead Space, a little bit of Batman, and even one super silly casting selection featured in there. Some of the characters are returning from previous lists but there are also quite a few newbies.
See what you think of our selections and also be sure to check out some of the other lists we came up with in 2011, like our one for Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
Isaac Clarke [Dead Space] - Jason Statham
Isaac Clarke is probably one of the bravest video game characters of this generation. He goes up against some of the freakiest looking creatures ever. The actor who plays this role has be convincingly brave and strong and Jason Statham has definitely proven that he has that in the roles he's taken over the years.
Kazuma Kiryu [Yakuza 4] - Kazuki Kitamura
Kazuma is the very definition of badass. Therefore, when casting someone in this role, you need to find someone who has the right amount of everything. Recently there was a Yakuza film produced called 'Ryu Ga Gotoku: Gekijo-Ban' or 'Yakuza: Like a Dragon'. Kazuki Kitamura played the lead role of Kazuma and I was impressed by his performance so much that I can't find anyone better to portray such an amazing character. If you haven't watched the film yet, I highly suggest you do so.
Ezio Auditore da Firenze [Assassin's Creed: Revelations] - Tom Hardy
Although Assassin's Creed: Revelations didn't really live up to its expectations, Ezio is still one of the best video game characters since his debut in Assassin's Creed II. Tom Hardy is a really gifted actor who would definitely do the character justice. If you have yet to watch a Tom Hardy film, start with 'Inception' or the 2007 remake of 'Oliver Twist'.
Aya Brea [The 3rd Birthday] - Vera Farmiga
Vera Farmiga is one of those really tough, but gorgeous actresses. She's handled all types of genre from mobster flicks like 'The Departed' to horror films like 'Orphan'. Although she's a bit older, I strongly believe she'd do Aya Brea justice. Also not to mention, I think she'd be an amazing action star.
Victor Sullivan [Uncharted 3] - JK Simmons
Everyone's got their hearts set on Bruce Campbell for the role of Sully and although I agree, I chose JK Simmons instead. Simmons is fantastic at comedy and has just the right amount of charm to pull off someone like Sully. Really either way you go is fine, but JK Simmons still deserves strong consideration.
Catwoman [Batman: Arkham City] - Marion Cotillard
After still remaining unconvinced by Anne Hathaway as Catwoman, I will stay firm in my belief that Marion Cotillard would portray Catwoman far better. She has the sex appeal and she has the poise. Don't believe me? Watch this scene from 'Nine'.
Adam Jensen [Deus Ex: Human Revolution] - Ethan Hawke
Ethan Hawke is one of those actors who is extremely talented but in desperate need of a comeback and I think he'd get that through playing a role like Adam Jensen. You might know him from 'Gattaca' where he plays a man who dreams of being an astronaut or 'Training Day' where he plays a narcotics officer along side a rogue detective played by Denzel Washington.
Cole MacGrath [Infamous 2] - Shawn Hatosy
If you have watched 'Dexter' Season 5, you probably know Shawn Hatosy as the road kill expert Boyd Fowler. But you might also know him as the school jock Stan in the cult classic 'The Faculty'. Either way, Hatosy is a terrific character actor who can play almost any type of person which is why he'd be perfect for a role like Cole MacGrath. Aside from his acting ability though, he does kind of resemble Cole.
Vincent [Catherine] - Adrian Grenier
When I first saw Vincent in Catherine, I immediately thought of Adrian Grenier when he was in 'You Drive Me Crazy'. Although Grenier has grown up since his high school rom com days, I still feel as though he'd fit the role of Vincent like a glove. If you need more proof, just watch 'Entourage'.
Wheatley [Portal 2] - Dianoga
And finally, to finish out the year on a high note, we have Wheatley and to be perfectly honest, the first time I ever saw Wheatley, I swore he looked just like the Dianoga in 'Star Wars: A New Hope'. He'd probably make a good Wheatley if he learned how to speak and perhaps stopped attempting to strangle people.
