Top Ten: Anticipated Games of 2011
PS3 PSP X360 DS Wii PC 0 Comments2011 is shaping up to be a pretty incredible year in gaming. Some of my favourite franchises over the last few years - Uncharted, Mass Effect and MotorStorm to name a few - are set to return and in spectacular fashion.
Combined with the current console debuts from revered studios Team Ico and id Software, what more could you ask for this year? That being said, the following are my most anticipated games currently scheduled for 2011, in alphabetical order.
Top Ten Anticipated Games of 2011
2009's inFamous greatly expanded upon the idea of a superhero open-world playground, first demonstrated a few years earlier by Crackdown. The incredible ease of movement throughout Empire City really made you feel powerful. Now with an engine actually designed for the PlayStation 3, Sucker Punch's latest project can't come soon enough.
thatgamecompany have garnered quite the following in their short lifespan. Their first two projects, flOw and Flower, received widespread critical acclaim for pushing the gaming medium in new directions. Journey looks to continue that trend, attempting make you feel small and helpless compared to the natural world. It's an intriguing concept, one that's still shrouded in mystery.
Rockstar has been on a roll as of late, with Grand Theft Auto IV, Red Dead Redemption, and a string of downloadable content for each series. L.A. Noire is a new setting for the open-world developer, continuing their exploration of different historical periods. The game places substantial emphasis on its characters, through advanced motion/facial capture to create an extremely realistic delivery. There's a lot to look forward to in this long awaited title.
The Last Guardian
The hype surrounding Team Ico's debut on the PlayStation 3 has reached biblical proportions. Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are easily some of the most memorable experiences I've ever had in gaming. The Last Guardian seems to be an interesting fusion of the two, with Ico's cooperative relationships and the scale of SOTC. Excited would be a massive understatement for how badly I want to experience this game.
Mass Effect 3
I never played the original Mass Effect, but after being convinced to try Mass Effect 2 earlier this year I immediately fell in love with the universe. The brilliant storytelling and significant player choice involved make BioWare the undisputed king of the Western RPG. I can't wait to see how my story plays out in Mass Effect 3.
The racing genre has never been at the top of my list. The one huge exception to that being the MotorStorm franchise. There's just something about the simple, arcade controls, clever branching path tracks, and gorgeous visuals that has always resonated with me. While I don't place much importance on trophies/achievements, Pacific Rift turned me into a completionist. More MotorStorm? Yes, please.
Portal was a puzzle experience unlike any other that took the games industry by storm. It was charming, and easy to grasp, yet very thought provoking. In fact, the tiny side project on Valve's Orange Box was so successful that a full, retail sequel is in the works. Portal 2 looks to expand on the original in every way, with a richer narrative, a standalone coop campaign, and mind bending puzzles cranked up to eleven.
RAGE, developed by id Software, is another title from an iconic studio making their long awaited return to store shelves. In id's case, RAGE will be their first new IP in a decade, and possibly their most ambitious project yet. A stunning open-world, RAGE utilizes id's engineering prowess to create dynamic AI, non-repeating textures, and smooth controls you'd expect to see from a scripted, linear experience.
SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs 4
The SOCOM series has, by far, consumed the largest amount of my time compared to any other in gaming. Zipper Interactive pioneered several elements of team-based online multiplayer in console shooter that have become standards today. SOCOM 4 will be the team's first entry into the series on PlayStation 3, and the legions of diehard SOCOM fans, such as myself, will be hanging onto to every word as its release date approaches.
Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
Naughty Dog's sequel to Uncharted 2: Among Thieves... enough said.
Child of Eden
Dead Space 2
Dragon Age II
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings
