Top 10 Video Game Heroines
PS3 X360 Wii DS PSP PC 3DS 0 CommentsWe could sit here listing the hottest video game girls and clash over whether or not we'd like to come home to a busty Dead or Alive gal, or a zombie killing machine like Zoey from Left 4 Dead. However, this list is dedicated simply to the best of the best, so we're going to run down which video game heroines deserve a medal for their efforts.
10. Nariko from Heavenly Sword
She hasn't been around for long and she certainly has not reached the iconic status of many of the ladies on this list, however, no one can ignore the fact that Nariko's presence on this list is well deserved. At first glance, she looks like nearly every bimbo Kratos would sleep with; her long red hair and bare mid drift aren't very convincing. But what you can't see is her very powerful mission in life. This is a woman who is fighting for a clan that doesn't even appreciate her. In fact, her clan goes as far to say that she's a cursed woman because she is female and not the heavenly sword wielding man they had prophesied. Things go even more sour when her clan is invaded by the evil King Bohan. As you would've guessed, the clan blames her for this happening. Instead of Nariko picking up and leaving her clan who remain captured by Bohan, Nariko steals the Heavenly Sword in hopes of killing Bohan herself. She does this even when she know that those not-chosen to wield the sword will die days after using it. The game focuses on the last five days of her life starting at her death on the battlefield and then going back in time to the day she first picked up the sword. Skimpy clothing or not, Nariko is one tough chick which makes her fitting for the number 10 spot.
9. Faith Conner from Mirror's Edge
Free-running in itself is pretty awesome, but playing a game where the lead protagonist is a female who specializes in it just makes the sport that much cooler. But it's not just Faith Conner's athletic talents that tags her as the 9th greatest female heroine in video games. On the streets at 16, Faith found herself a career as a petty thief. It wasn't until her fortunate run-in with a man named Mercury that things began to look up. He taught her how to be a successful free runner. Mirror's Edge then takes place a few years after, with Faith re-joining the free-running crew after sustaining an injury that kept her out for a good while. Worth noting is that while she can pick up weapons, Faith is primarily journeying without a firearm of any kind taking on dozens of officers. Her main objective is to figure out all the secrets surrounding the murder of mayoral candidate Robert Pope and also clear her sister's name. She does this with almost no help and with the greatest of ease making Faith our number 9 greatest female video game heroine.
8. Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy VII
Tifa is arguably one of the most iconic female characters of the JRPG genre. Of course a lot of this is because of her mini-skirt, long legs, and well endowed chest. However, this is not the reason she makes our list. Born in Nibelheim, Tifa was out-going, lively, and had a ton of friends. It wasn't until Sephiroth burned down her hometown that Tifa left Nibelheim sustaining a terrible injury after attempting to take on Sephiroth herself. It was from this experience that Tifa decided to strengthen her fighting techniques. Alongside Cloud, she would fight Sephiroth for what he did to Nibelheim. Tifa is one of the most selfless characters of any Final Fantasy. She cares so much for others and almost died attempting to avenge the people she loves. Through the entire FFVII series, Tifa has been the voice for the family of characters looking out for Cloud, Marlene, Barrett and so on. There are those who write her off, but no one can deny her strength both physically and emotionally. This is why Tifa punches in at number 8.
7. The Boss from Metal Gear Solid 3
To fans of the Metal Gear Solid series, few can deny that "The Boss", with her sheer strength and determination, deserves to be on this list. As the "mother" of Special Forces, she is right up there with the Cobra Units. She's even the founder of the group as well as the reason the Close Quarter Combat techniques exists. Of her many amazing feats, she survived a bullet to the side of her brain while pregnant and had Caesarean birth performed on her while on the battlefield. So as not to spoil the story, we will simply say the Boss is one chick you do not want to mess with which is why we've given her the number 7 spot.
6. Kitana from Mortal Kombat
"You will learn respect", especially if you decide to up against our next heroine, Kitana, and her razor sharp steel fans. Not only does this 10,000 year old princess fight well for her age, she doesn't look a day over 20. In Mortal Kombat II, she proved herself a valuable opponent to the bad guys as well as a valuable ally to the good guys. She was raised by Shao Kahn himself, but once she learned the grim truth about her childhood, she quickly resented him choosing to fight against him rather than join him. Though she isn't the first female character in the Mortal Kombat series, her and her 'clone' sister for that matter quickly became poster girls for the series. Her fan abilities also made her arguably the most powerful character of Mortal Kombat II which lead to her abilities getting nerfed in the future titles. Kitana easily fits in the number 6 spot although this might be because we'd rather not get killed by one of her explosive fatalities.
5. Alyx Vance from Half Life 2
Skilled hacker Alyx has only been featured in Half Life 2 and its other episodes. Life wouldn't be nearly as good for Gordon Freeman without her, but Alyx was never intended to be the sexy bombshell type. Her clothes remain tasteful and yet Alyx still remains sexy in her confidence and down to earth personality. Her role in the game is mainly just to help Gordon Freeman as he fights various enemies throughout. Because of this, she's one of the most important characters of the game. Also worth mentioning are her romantic ties to Gordon. Alyx is just one of those awesome characters you can't help but love and wish were real which is why she gravitates to the number 5 spot.
4. Jade from Beyond Good and Evil
Jade is one of those "girl next door" type of characters. Designer Michel Ancel describes her as having a "soul" instead of being a just a pretty set of pixels. Jade is a photographer who catalogs all animals on the Hillys. She does this in order to help raise money for her orphanage to operate. She is recruited by the IRIS Network in order to expose an elite military group who was said to have collaborated with the DomZ, an aggressive alien race. Jade is praised for being tasteful and attractive, a concept that many directors don't believe in. She's just a normal girl who falls into an extreme situation. Jade snaps in at number 4 without help from a miniskirt.
3. Jill Valentine from Resident Evil
There are plenty of Resident Evil gals to choose from, however, Jill Valentine still manages to stand out among the group. She is a Special Operations Agent of the Bio-terrorism Security Assessment Alliance. She has managed to survive plenty of incidents such as the "Mansion" incident and the Raccoon City Outbreak. She's been through experimentation, she's been brain-washed, and chased by one of the most fearsome enemies in Resident Evil, Nemesis. After a long disappearance, Jill is now returning in the 3DS title, Resident Evil Revelations. Jill blots out the competition taking the number 3 spot on our list.
2. Samus Aran from Metroid
Back in 1986, it took a very dedicated gamer to find out that Samus Aran was in fact a woman. (In case you didn't know, if you beat the original Metroid in under an hour, you could unlock the special skin revealing Samus' gender). But gender shock aside Samus is a space bounty hunter who single-handedly destroyed a Space Pirate base and exterminated the last of the Metroid species. Unlike a lot of other heroines on the list, Samus does not have a very defined personality nor does anyone know her exact age. All we do know is that 1, she's out for revenge, and 2, she's one of the most well respected heroines. Samus blasts her way into the number 2 spot.
1. Lara Croft from Tomb Raider
Now before everyone rage quits this article, let's get one thing straight. This may be hard to swallow for some, but Lara Croft is arguably the most iconic female protagonist of the video games industry. Since 1996, she's won the hearts of many people whether it's because of her determination and intelligence or her aesthetics. Raised an aristocrat and betrothed to the Earl of Farrington,. Lara was set to live the life of a noble. However, after a nasty plane crash leaving Lara stranded for two weeks in the Himalayas, Lara traded her former life for one of adventure. In her experiences she has swept up an Atlanean artifact, stolen back the Dagger of Xian, and sought out meteorite fragments that give people supernatural powers. She's taken on cults, bears, and T-Rexes. Now she's been given a next gen reboot and is looking better than ever.
