Was just curious, picked up Birth By Sleep the other day, but realized I'm not familiar with the KH story at all.

In considering getting caught up in the story, I was looking at all the titles. Lot's of remakes, ports, and side titles. I've decided on picking up 1, Re:Chain of Memories, and 2 on PS2.

Is this logical or are they bundled elsewhere or planned to be remade? Also, would I be missing much not having DS for 358/2? Is it worth getting into this series now? Will the graphics be too hard to adapt to for today's age? I've managed to enjoy FF12 recently with it's graphics to give an idea of what I'm able to stand (not that PS2 is bad, but it's hard to go back from PS3/Xbox360)

Thanks in advance, I'm really getting interested in this series and hoping to get some insight from those who've known it for a while.

there are no plans for having KH 1 or 2 being remade YET. but i wouldn't hold my breath, my advice is to as you said pick up the PS2 games, and if you have the DS try having a look at 358/2 days and Re:coded but only after you've played through the PS2 games, otherwise the portable games will just confuse you.

as for a bundled remake, there is speculation that SE will do a PSN/PS3 remake of KH1/2 in the 10th anniversary next year. but that will likely mean that there will be more distractions on the development of either KH:DDD or KH3. so the remakes probably won't happen for years. sorry Sad

Appreciate the feedback. Yeah, sadly I don't have DS. Though my lineup for it is increasing so may in future.

I don't recall them ever doing remakes of PS2 games on PS3, but that would save me from having to use a controller that has a wire (my ps2 hehe).

Think I've decided on getting just KH1, trying it out, and then moving from there.

Thanks a bunch for the info!

As long as you play the main titles and Chain of Memories the story is mostly coherent. There are definitely a few things that will take time to understand, but if you give the main series a play through everything will be much more enjoyable.

As far as 358/2 days goes. It'll make KH2 make more sense, but if you don't have a DS, watch a playthrough on Youtube or read a story synopsis. It has a great story, but it's not a DS seller.

And once you're through, watch the secret ending of RE:Coded. Other than that. Skip Re:Coded entirely.

For important story content, you can pass on 358/2 and coded. But definitely get BBS, 1, CoM and 2. I'd say those are all essential. As for graphics, I think they're still pretty good, shouldn't bug you too much, plus graphics aren't everything in a game, especially an amazing game like Kingdom Hearts.

Yeah, like Branden said above, just read the plot synopsises for 358/2 and coded.

@DaftLink17
Yeah, I doubt the graphics will bother me too much. Been playing a lot of old PS1 classics on my PSP, Gameplay is a lot more than graphics, just sometimes it gets to be headache inducing to get used to.

I bought KH1 today, going to see if I liked KH from that. If I end up loving it, I'll be getting a 3DS and 358/2 later. I had planned on getting 3DS for some FF titles and the coming Tales game so not too biggy. (ugh that price tag though)

I had planned skipping Re:coded, heard too much bad about it lol. Think I'll take your word on just watching it on youtube.

All of spinoffs except for Birth By Sleep aren't completely essential to the story, but they do tack on additional lore that can connect the whole puzzle. However, it is very expensive if you want to follow the whole series, but do not have all of the consoles currently needed. This is why I skipped Birth By Sleep, which I probably shouldn't have. 358/2 Days was really less of a lore experience and more of a regular game, as it seemed a little light on story. It is, however, incredibly fun to play in the later missions and gets better at the end of the story mode. The replay value is decent if you're going for 100% completion of all missions, which will give you the ability to use Sora in Mission Mode.

Anyways, while the spinoffs aren't COMPLETELY important to the story, it doesn't mean that they should entirely be skipped over. Re: Coded was apparently, not worth the money paid for it, as Fozzie, Darryl, Churro, and Melissa said on KHU about 2 episodes back. I haven't played it yet, but I'm avoiding that after hearing that quick review. I would recommend playing Chain of Memories BEFORE KH2 or 358/2 Days as well, since it really helps you identify the Organization characters, and provides some vital information on other plotlines as well. Birth By Sleep is also recommended, as it will probably help for later games to come, such as Dream Drop Distance for the 3DS, and (fingers crossed) Kingdom Hearts 3. Seeing as you've already played it, then you should be fine.

The bottom line is that you should probably play the main 2 games, Chain of Memories or Re: Chain of Memories (The PS2 version of the original game), and 358/2 Days. Re: Coded is up to you.

Thanks for the info Bexn.

I'm over halfway through first title and I'm enjoying it so far. Only problem I've really had is sometimes the fights drag out with excessive spawning. Even with it's age, the game still looks beautiful. I love the style and visuals.

Anyhow, I think I'm set on getting Chain of Memories and KH2 soon. We'll see!
