A thought occurred to me over the weekend when I was singing Nirvana to myself in the shower - man, I really wish I had been alive and old enough to appreciate grunge music when it came to the forefront in the early '90s. I would have loved to see Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains in concert in their heyday, but alas I am left to listen to their legacy, which is somewhat different. It is the same with prog. rock too, I wish I had been there when it 'happened'.

One genre I am glad to be my current age and living through right now is dubstep. I love it, but I can't see it being quite the same in 20 years, even for someone discovering it for the first time.

So what genres do you wish you were there to experience at the time? Smile

I was born and grew up in the 90's it has a special place in my heart, so I wish I was a little older to experience it more fully. I love the 80's too. Those were some magical years. Though it doesn't stop me from going to concerts Smile The only concerts I've been to featured artists from the 70's and 80's. Heart, Cheap Trick, Journey, White Snake, Judas Priest, and I got tickets to see Van Halen in June. Smile Though I do love Dubstep as well.

I'm gonna be cheap and just say that I'm really happy living through what I'm living now. It has the benefit of all the stuff I like that's been released recently whilst also being able to enjoy stuff in the past!

Honestly. My only regret is that I'll never be able to see the Beatles play live.

However, if I could spend a day in the future (100 years or so) then I would love to see where popular music takes us in the future. Smile

Interesting... generally I feel like the '80s were a bit of a slump in terms of good music - the mainstream stuff isn't really my thing at all. There are the fantastic gems of tunes of course, and the serious development of metal, but the 'raw synth' kind of stuff isn't for me.

Same with the Beatles, Chloe. They're amiable enough, but highly overrated in my humble opinion. But that is one of the beauties of music too - so many people enjoy so many different things.

Like Clo I'm very much happy with the current genre. There's some bands that have been and gone that I'd love to have lived through their prime days, and I'd also love to see how music evolves in the future, however the current generation of music that appeals to me is the most influential in my life, and I'm happy with that ^,^

For anyone who knows me, I would love to live in the classical period (1750 - 1820 IIRC) The level of music and the composers that lived in that time was so amazing. And being a cellist, having the chance to be conducted by anyone of the greats would be so amazing!! Big Grin

I'm not a fan of the classical period actually haha, one of my least favourite periods. I prefer the emotion of the romantic period, or as a cellist as well, the Baroque period (1600 - 1750) has more appeal with Bach and Handel rocking some awesome cello suites and sonatas. But of them all, I love the early 20th century - Bloch, Rachmaninoff, Shostakovic...
I wouldn't choose to live through them though, other than that "conducting" element, I'm rather glad to have all of this history of music accessible to me for playing; I can cherry pick the best!

I don't mind the early 20th century and Romantic as well. They are indeed very melodic and passionate. But there is something about those juicy chord structures that gets me excited in Classical music. Big Grin
