Ive recently been turned off by the psVita for several reasons. Tbh, i dont know how much fun ill get out of playing vita games. As far as my psp went, i used it almost entirely to play ps1 classics, and thats it. Sure there were a few good psp games, but having the chance to play console games from my favorite era on a handheld was the real appeal for me.
The original appeal i had for the Vita was my hope that sony would expand to ps2 classics and they would be a lot more accessible with the Vita's two joysticks. But with the pace at which ps2 classics are expanding, i dont think the best titles will ever make it to psn. One of the reasons for this is the fact that companies are releasing HD remakes of ps2 games, and Sony wouldnt want to release the original versions as well as the hd versions. Also, because i rely on psn for the classics, i would need to buy a card for my vita which would ramp the price up too much (i have a pspGo so im used to having 16 gigs of internal space.)
So with the ps2 classics not looking too hopeful, i might as well keep my psp for the ps1 classics. No use in buying a new system if all im going to do is play games i already can with the psp.
Now about my skepticism for vita games, it really stems from my experiences with psp games. They always felt like they were missing something. With mgs peace walker it was the odd controls and the lack of emphasis on stealth. With dissida it was the repetitiveness. And most other games just felt too short and therefore not worth my money. The one place where the psp shined was with j-rpg's. Games like phantasy star portable 2, cladun, tactics ogre, ff type-0, etc. were the real hits. Unfortunately, i never got around to playing any of those games since i was skeptical of replay value and invested in console games instead.
Also, i just found out that uncharted GA has no multiplayer which is a major disappointment for me. I know that uncharted is best for it's campaign, but its the kind of game that's too easy to complete 100% and id need something else for replay value. $50 for a game that lasts me only 40hrs just isn't worth it. and i know that Sony Bend could have pulled the multiplayer off since they did such a good job with syphon filter.
Tbh, the peripherals like skype, 3g, and FB dont matter to me at all. All i care about are the games and it seems like the only appeal are j-rpg's that may or may not be any good. The problem i think with sony handheld games is that none of the major devs like ND, insomniac, etc. actually make the games. Sony puts all their hardcore games into the ps3. However, it seems to me that Nintendo puts the majority of their hardcore games into their handhelds. I know ill get good games on the 3ds with mario, mario cart, Zelda OoT, the golden sun franchise, metroid, and possibly even smash bros. at some point, but im too unsure about sony's games. I know that resistance, killzone, LBP, and uncharted will all be released on the Vita, but the fact that NONE of them will be developed by their original creators is just too scary. Everybody loved R&C, Jak and Daxter, and Sly Cooper, but ps move hero's was a disaster. Thats sort of how i feel toward sony franchises being made by other dev teams.
Plus with the new price of the 3ds being soooo much more realistic than the vita's, it would be less of a risk investing in.
With a ps3 for ps3 games and HD remakes, a psp for ps1 classics, and a 3ds for classic Nintendo franchises and remakes, i think id be all set. I wouldnt really mind missing out on what they make for the Vita since theres such a high possibility of them being mediocre (at least the western made ones).
