We all have our favourite video game protagonists, but I think we often forget how great some of the secondary characters can be.

Every Sonic must have his Tails. Where would Mario be without Luigi? Maybe Link could've ditched Navi... But the point remains! There are loads of titles that simply wouldn't be the same without these extra characters!

So guys... This thread is all about great sidekick characters! Who are your favourites? I would guess that I'm not the only one that has sometimes found themselves loving the sidekick more than the main character!


Ignoring the fact that there are loads of "sidekicks" in Final Fantasy games, I think I'd have to go with Stefan Bekowsky from LA Noire. He was one of the best characters in the game, and was still funny whilst ultimately remaining nice to the main character Phelps. Another sidekick I wanna mention is Elika from Prince of Persia (2008); she was the driving force behind the story of the game, and was a big factor in some of the game play. The ending obviously surrounded her heavily (can't say how exactly without spoilering) but I thought it was really original.

More are the Companion Cube from Portal (Nuuuuuuuuuues! How could GLaDOS make me incinerate you) and, of course, Victor "Goddamn" Sullivan.

So how about you guys? Who are your favourites? What do you think makes a great sidekick? Do they have to be inherently useful to your game, or do you like them just to be there to slip in a few jokes every so often?

SULLY! One of the best in-game partners imo, he just drops so many hilarious lines and can still pack a punch despite his age. Clank from Ratchet & Clank is pretty awesome too, I don't know why but he reminds me of Mr. Bean, plus he literally watches Ratchet's back. xD Again, the banter between the two are classic and entertaining.

Oh, most definitely Grimoire Weiss & Kainé from NIER. Their quarreling is indeed quite funny. Maybe a bit strong on profane language ;-D - that's why I put it in "spoiler tags" - so everyone who doesn't want to read it, just don't NIER wouldn't be the same without them, together with Nier they form a wonderfully harmonic disarray.

Hm, let me think. There's also Garrus from Mass Effect 1&2, who is up to now one of the most valued members of "my" crew. If you've only played ME2, you probably won't understand why though - it's all in ME1 ;-)

Varric from Dragon Age II - Alistair, Wynne and Morrigan from Dragon Age Origins (their party banter is legendary!)

as far as sidekicks go, Daxter is high on my list. I've always enjoyed his wisecracking nature, and "I'm the true hero of this story" attitude ^_^

You know the Legend of Spyro series wasn't bad(it wasn't good either), but Sparx's Comedy relief made the game series a little more enjoyable.

Donald and Goofy in Kingdom Hearts are great sidekicks for Sora! Sure, their AI is questionable but the are absolutely ideal as damage fodder in battle. They are also crucial for the Disney parts of the games. They act as perfect companions for Sora and they do a lot to "liven up" some of the more tense story segments of the series.

Also, I always loved Daxter as a sidekick for Jak. He doesn't do much gameplay-wise (which I prefer) but he does A TON to make the games hilarious!

Indeed. especially the scenes that happen whenever you die in 1 and 3. I wish they'd have put some in 2 though

I think one of the original favorites was Tails from Sonic the Hedgehog. Then that moved to Daxter from Jak and Daxter, for his snarky humor. Then to more recent is probably Dog from Fable 2-3, hated both those games but that dog was my companion all the way..

I guess recently one of my all time favorites is Repede from Tales of Vesperia. If you watch the movie about Yuri's and Repedes history together, it's rough (it had me nearly in tears). Amazing bond.

Garrus from ME, and ME2. I think you'd have to play to understand, but he is the best crew mate in mass effect, and you get him again in me2.
