I'm sure many of you will have seen this show, but I personally had never watched it until mid-December. After seeing a couple of episodes and howling, I decided to watch them in order. I spent most of the Christmas holidays watching episode after episode and I am currently about ¾ of the way through the third series.

I love the humour, particularly as it appeals to the gaming and physics geek in me, but I also love the characters too. Jim Parsons portrayal of Sheldon Cooper is very brilliant. In a similar way to Futurama, it has enough nerdy hints to appeal to the nerds, whilst it takes the mick out of the nerds too - basically meaning it can be enjoyed by everyone. It seems to have the potential to go far, and I hope it does.

Who else loves TBBT?

Yep, it's lots of fun, have watched the first few series, yet to see the most recent one (to come out on DVD over here) though. Manages to go over-the-top on the science *just enough* for it still to be hilarious ^_^

I hate it.

1) A lot of the "jokes" seem to be "HAHA THAT GEEK SAID SOMETHING NONSENSICALLY GEEKY". That's not funny. That's sorta bullying. The first two seasons The IT Crowd makes geeky jokes without being offensive (any season after that are no where near as funny, simply because they ran out of good jokes).

2) I watched an episode where the laugh track had been removed. You literally cannot tell where you're supposed to laugh.

I think I like watching it because of the funny characters as opposed to individual "jokes". To me the interplay between the characters is where the most humour lies. I will admit that I have watched a couple episodes that have not been amusing at all to me though.

I agree with Chole on this one. The Big Bang Theory is pretty much a slap in the face toward the whole nerd community, in my opinion. Not only does it exploit stereotypes of the nerd community, but almost does it in the poorest of tastes. Mind you, this probably wouldn't be much of a problem if a) the jokes are funny or, b) the jokes were at least relevant. Thing is, we've seen so many show on the internet, done by nerds, and done SOOOO much better (i.e. The Guild).

Exactly.

Of course, I'm not against poking fun at these niches of people, but I do think that The Big Bang Theory is more exploitative than anything.

Another good example of good geek humour is the film Fanboys (but you'll only love it if you're a Star Wars fan, because 80% of the humour is based on that). They don't make fun of geeks for being geeks... They take the interests and the situations surrounding their lives and make that into the humour.

I actually really enjoy it. As Sam said, the interplay holds some of the best humour, but I do enjoy some of the outwardly "nerdy" jokes. (i.e. everything that mocks the new Green Lantern movie xD) Whether I enjoy the show because I read lots of comics, play lots of games, read Lord of The Rings, etc. and thus get most of the jokes, or because I just have an odd sense of humour is beyond me. I don't personally think it really mocks nerd culture and being a nerd, but that's just me (though I can definitely understand why and where people see that in the show.) At the end of the day though, I enjoy it, and I'll watch it when it's on. x)

I started watching TBBT at the beginning of last season and went back and watched the whole series. I love the characters and the jokes are pretty funny for the most part. The small cast tends to lead to some repetitive interactions, but then again they have added some main characters over the years so that helps.

@Clo, This could be the end of our relationship... xD

I absolutely love TBBT =D I myself can't see it being insulting to geeks, but I suppose that's just me ^,^

I love Sheldon though, so hilarious and well acted imo. I love the episode where Penny gives Sheldon a Christmas pressie, and his reaction through the episode and then after he receives his XD
