Seems like every other day I'm making one of these start-up threads, eh? Tongue

You guys have all heard of book clubs right? Basically, a group of people decide to all read the same book at the same time, agreeing each week to read up to a certain point then meet up together to discuss what they've read so far. Well, let's take that idea and create our very own Video Game Club!

The format will very much follow that which I've just outlined. Depending on the game we've chosen, each week or fortnight we'll play up to a predetermined part of the game (a chapter, or boss, for example) and then come back to a thread on the forums to discuss what we liked/disliked or discovered, etc. Nothing is off limits in the discussions, except that you only talk about things pertaining to that section of the game. There will be spoilers obviously when discussing plot, but ONLY up til that part of the game, so newcomers to a title are very much welcome. People who have played before can join in an discuss their efforts to clean up trophies or talk about things which they have experienced via another playthrough which they didn't see on their first one. The discussion points are endless!

So the question is... What do you guys think? Would you be down for this? I'm conscious that people might not be able to get hold of brand new games, so I'm very interested in grabbing at older titles that people can get with no worries. Does any one have any suggestions of games that you'd like to play via this? You all know I'm a fangirl and will make you all play UC2 *again* if you let me have my way. Tongue

Anyway, ALL thoughts, feelings, opinions, and general feedback is as always appreciated.
Out of all the things I've started planning for GU so far this year, I'm most excited for this one.
I hope you guys can share in that. Smile

Because I'm stupid I thought up a stupid title: GAGU (Gaming Alongside Gaming Union - I love my acronyms). Think of a non-stupid group name and I'll give you a cookie.

Very, very interesting...I'd be down for it...

Would this mean that we play an entire game before switching, or just that part, and then another game?

And yes Asth, we'll most likely let you have your way...Tongue

I'm going to assume that scheduled discussion sessions would take place through skype or something.

I think games are a little too short and lack enough plot for people to discuss. Even if a game was as plot driven as Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts, I can't imagine people would want to only play to a certain point in a game, then wait for other people to finish and the scheduled discussion session to occur before progressing. People would just complete the game before joining a session, which kind of defeats the purpose.

Not to mention, this is a discussion board. There's no reason discussion can't take place within a designated thread that has "[SPOILERS]" on the title.

^ Well, it does say that we'll come back to the forums and make a thread for it. I think that we should give people a week to play the specific section, and then at the end, have a discussion. That way, if people still want to join into the discussion, they can.

Yep, a designated thread each week/fortnight (depending on frequency we decide on, but I think two weeks is too long).

My point about spoilers is this: Say we're playing UC3. One week may have you playing from Chapter 12 til the end of 14 (The section where Drake is chasing Rameses for Sully, per se). The cutscenes leading into and out of these chapters deviate the story very heavily, and while we know what happens on either side of this, other people participating may not. We want to include people who haven't yet completed the game to do their homework and join in without having the ending spoiled.

Oh goodness, I love this idea but know I'd fail at NOT going passed the designated point of the week.

In comparison, I'm the guy that stays up all night finishing the book when the book club is only supposed to read the first chapter.

Sounds like an interesting idea. I unfortunately would only be able to partake of the festivities when it came to older titles (such as some PS2 and GC titles), but I'd be rather interested.

as for acronyms, how about something like GURC (Gaming Union Replayer's Club)? I would assume that we would be more likely to be playing games that are generally old enough that a decent number of us would probably be re-playing.

Zeruel - I'd try to pace it so that we're not asking too much of people from week to week, so that everyone has ample time to get to the next part. Something like 2-4 hours worth maybe? How does that sound to everyone else interested in taking part?

Zero - I'm aware that there are people without current gen consoles or without the finances to purchase brand new games, so I'm definitely going to try to focus this on games which are easy for most people to get a hold of. *whispers* I'm not ruling out games which people might be able to get a hold of on ROM *whispers* Needless to say, there will be a mash up of different stuff in order to cater for all those that wanna take part. Smile I'm not sure about calling it GURC, because I'm hoping to play current gen titles as well, so the "Replay" part might not be so relevant! Tongue

Just noticed that I didn't reply to Kid earlier... I think it would be more fun to play through the whole game before moving on to the next one. I'm not intending to try to go through a whole JRPG (that'd get boring), but mainly shorter story driven titles. Of course, that's entirely up to what everybody else feels like. There might be a time where we start a game and all get entirely bored by it and stuggle to meet the weekly goals so just want to give up on it. XD

I would figure as much, I'm just stating that my activity in this would indeed be limited to past gen consoles.

indeed, which is why this is such a great idea

well, it can be called "Replay" and still be on the current gen (some may be playing it for their first time, but then again, same can be said for many classic games)

how about something more along the lines of Gaming Union's Game of the Week (GUGotW)? or Gaming Union's Weekly Gaming Club (GUWGC)? idk, maybe I'm trying too hard Big Grin

I guess it would depend on the game. I get carried away with some games more than others. But I have more freedom outside my work schedule than most.

I guess it's best to not ask too much, and those people that can play more fill that time with Grinding/Farming/Play other games. Rather than expect everyone else to keep pace with a heavy gamer Tongue
