Quote:Potentially, Persona 3 could have been a train wreck. A spinoff of the Shin Megami Tensei series, it features randomly generated stages, with a huge focus on dungeon crawling. One only need to look at the Western reviews (and sales) of such conceptually similar titles like Azure Dreams (PSOne), or The Nightmare of Druaga (PS2) to see that Western JRPG fans traditionally haven't cared for these types of games.

I've only played the PSP version and I have to say, it was a classic for me. Juggling schedules, raising relationships, battling baddies, and forging your personas all while getting in your exam studies. It's weird but so well done. The soundtrack is catchy but has some off the wall songs and the interface is one of the best I've seen in a game. Its not for everyone but definitely should be tried by all.

lol very nice article and summary Colin. I personally love P3 to death. The music is amazing! (made even better in FES with heartful cry Big Grin). The artwork is great and the gameplay is fun. It's always fun to go through the game with maxing every link and I love the feeling of triumph when that happens. Amazing game with little or no flaws

FREAKING LOVE PERSONA 3 (h) I mean how many RPGs out there put you in the shoes of a high school student who lives the usual teenage life in the day and takes his fellow 'dormies' out to a mysterious Phenomenal world and kick some dark supernatural butt at midnight? Plus I'm a sucker for anything with anime style characters and worlds Tongue

I'm just saying: if you have to pick only one version of this game to play, play the PSP version. P3P is by far the best iteration of this game, especially the girl route, which fixes a lot of the problems with both the original, AND the next in the series, Persona 4.

One of my favourite games of "this" gen.

lol well that really depends on perspectives. I've only played P3 and P3FES but I love both of them and I understand the story completely. And well, for guys, you don't really need the girl route Tongue

And woops haha my bad Colin. Good Job Patrick!

I'm definitely not bagging on any of the other versions or the boy route in general, but the version I recommended is definitely the best one.

The girl version is better because it fixing some pacing issues with the story, tweaks the combat and dungeon crawling mechanics, and offers greater flexibility in your links and the different story outcomes. I'm not saying it's better because it lets you play as a girl, that's silly. As a woman, I often play as a guy in games if I like the character design better for him or whatnot. The way the game is laid out is just objectively better in the girl route.

Don't get me wrong! I love all three versions of this game. But the PSP port in general and the girl route in particular are definitely the best iterations in gameplay, story, flexibility, and writing.

haha I was kidding about that and if it seemed like I meant it in a derogatory way, I apologize. Idk, I thought the pacing and story were all done really well in the normal games and such. True, I haven't played P3P yet so I can't really say. Idk I think it might be because I love the game so much that I either don't have any issues/see flaws or it's cause I don't pay close enough attention that I think 3, the original, is best as is. haha and I can see your point there.
