Quote:Sony's PlayStation Vita is out in a couple of days, coming in the form of two models for the gaming populace to choose from: the standard Wi-Fi model and a 3G model packaged with your respective telecoms company. The question of whether the 3G model is worth the extra bills has been raised a number of times, and Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida has admitted that it's a completely understandable sentiment.

I take my investments seriously and this is one investment that I will not take part in.

I'm getting the 3G/WiFi version, no contest (In 9 hours!). While I don't care for the 3G, the First Release Bundle makes it a no brainer for me.

If I went for the WiFi version I'd be paying (minimum): 250Vita+35MemoryCard=$285

So If I'm paying that already, I might as well throw in an extra 15 bucks, get a free 8GB memory card, secure the 3G for possible future need, get a crummy free shooter game I may play at some point, and get a free 3G timecard.

Also, the way you word the 3G model as "Monthly Billed," makes it sound as if you'll be stuck in a monthly charge. This is untrue as it's a non-contract pre-pay system. It has an opt-out recurring, but in no way are you required to use it. I'll be keeping it off until I go on trips, in which time I'll probably grab a month of service.

Yes, it sounds weird having it but not using it. However it's best to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it (IMO). There's also always a chance in the future for more cheaper costing 3G services, as unlikely as it seems. Plus that's the case with most devices I have anymore. Tons of stuff that comes along with the deal.
