You had me at the title. FFXII was amazing. I think the way you started this article is exactly what FFXII excelled as. In it's core it is an amazing open field monster hunting title with an unique gambit system. I could spend hours tweeking my characters, getting their best gear, exploring, and killing new found creatures. It was an amazing experience that I still fondly remember today.

Sure it had it's follies. I think if they had made Balthier the lead, this game would have had much greater reception. Or just gave Vaan a purpose like had him as an Ex-Judge or something. This game needed better character design and more purpose. Granted I'm on the opinion that Ashe's quest to regaining her queenship was decent. I also think if they had expanded on the Judges, it would have been greater as well. All that said, the story remains the only real beef in my book (besides Ashe's and Fran's terrible outfits). However if you think of the game more as an Exploration/MonsterHunter-esk, it's easier to swallow.

Under VI, this game takes my second favorite FF title spot. It also remains my second under FFVI for wanting a remake/remaster/HD version.
