Like, I’m sure, most people on here I’m hoping we get some news, updates, maybe even a release date for Final Fantasy Versus XIII at E3 this year. A couple years ago Sony used Final Fantasy XIV as one of their big announcements, here’s hoping Versus XIII is that for them this year. I haven’t seen these things discussed in other threads, but there are several gameplay elements that have me really excited for Versus XIII again., after being meh about the game for the last 3 years or so.

One thing I'm excited to see return to the series is the world map. Nomura has confirmed through several interviews and tweets that Final Fantasy Versus XIII will feature a world map. The first Final Fantasy game I played with Final Fantasy II (IV) on the Super Nintendo, and I remember when the world map used to be a staple and a given in a Final Fantasy game. Having not had one since Final Fantasy IX (so 12 years now) I’m actually excited about the idea of having a world map again.

Related to the world map, apparently Versus XIII will also see the return of controllable airships. Being able to fly an airship over the world map was also a staple of Final Fantasy games since the beginning. X and XII featured airships but all you did was point and click on were you wanted to go, and XIII was missing an airship altogether.

Final Fantasy games have never been open games or featured a lot of exploration (if any) and I always felt that saying XIII was too linear was a lame criticism to make, ALL Final Fantasy games have been linear. Having that world map connects the player to the world more. Gives you a sense of the world, were things are, how far you’re travelling. I always feel like I’m going far from home the first time I leave the starting town and it becomes too far away to go back and rest at – I’m now out in the world. I hope Versus brings that feeling back to the series.

The last element I’m going to touch on right now is the cut scenes. Nomura is replacing In Game Cut Scenes with what he calls Real Time Events. These events will be very similar to in game cut scenes but the player will be able to control the character(s?) in the scene. Move around and interact with things during the cut scene. I think this sounds interesting and I like that with the Real Time Events Square Enix is trying a new/different way to include the player into cut scenes rather then just coping what Bioware has done, like they did in XIII-2. I like that Nomura is being innovative and trying to figure out a different way to do what fans wants rather then just copying what others are doing and if it works will/could help the series as a whole and give Final Fantasy a new element to “call its own”.

XIII had airships. You just got to fly in it once and you had no say in the matter and it was a one-way trip and even though you were doing something fun you weren't even given the illusion of control Tongue
