Quote:So Capcom's latest round of boasting includes their expected sales figures for Resident Evil 6, which they expect to hit around 7 million copies and everyone is all abuzz about Shinji Mikami (the designer behind the original Resident Evil title) creating a true survival horror experience instead. When looking a bit further afield, we've had some pretty decent survival horror games recently too. Dead Space 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and F.E.A.R. 3 were all enjoyable enough games, and at times scary in their own right. But are these titles are hardly representative of the state of survival horror, and Resident Evil's success shouldn't be taken as a sign that the genre is flourishing amongst the masses. Quite the opposite, it feels like each new generation of horror games does more to streamline the fear and do away with all of the limiting factors that make survival horror games so much fun to play. So where do we turn to for games that are more psychological thrillers than they are shoot em up? Why the indie scene of course.

Sadly, I believe survival horror is just doomed to die. Partly because we are so desensitized to horror anymore. Partly because all these companies want to tap into the action shoot'em'up cash cow.

The last/recent game I ran into that recaptured my love for survival horror is Alan Wake. The game spooked the hell out of me. Especially on Nightmare mode where you're quite often just trying to flee for your life and survive, because it's impossible to fight back most the time. I think if anyone wants to rekindle survival horror, they need to look at Alan Wake.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories was a good take imo. Even utilized the Wii Remote decently, not to mention the PSP port was still really good. It took away combat entirely, and the atmosphere was perfect.

Regarding FPS survival horror, I felt that Metro 2033 wasn't that bad. The atmosphere was intimidating and the lack of ammunition made the sense of fear and tension all the more overwhelming. The sound design was great too and added to the experience - the same can be said for the first Dead Space, which had a really eery ambiance.

Resi 6 doesn't look to be heading in any of those directions unfortunately, it looks more like Dead Space 2, which went the super action route.

I do have hopes for Aliens: Colonial Marines capturing the same atmosphere as the first film. It looks promising.
