going through youtube, I come across a lot of random stuff that I watch: VG Music, Piano variations, 8-bit stuff on Famitracker, slow motion stuff, mythbusters, wrestling clips, dry ice bombs, dominos, bloopers, glitches, betas, just all sorts of random stuff. One thing that I come across on occasion that really wows me are Tool Assisted Speedruns.

For those that don't know, Tool Assisted Speedruns (or TAS for short) are speedruns done on emulators using slow motion and tons of savestates to basically break the game to the point where you beat it as fast as possible. The things done in these runs are things you can do in the game already, w/o cheats or anything, but usually to do them is quite a task, and in order to make them all work for you in perfect fashion, you need to be super human. this is where the tools come in.
While, as I said before, this task is done with the savestate and slow motion functions on emulators, you don't see any of this, because the game is recorded at normal speed, and edited nicely together to be seamless

now, in my latest run in with these, I came across a TAS of Pokemon Yellow beaten in 1 minute and 43 seconds... Now, you may be reading that and saying to yourself "WTF?!?! BS!!! that game can't be beaten that fast"
well... take a look for yourself
btw, don't blink, you might miss it Tongue

well, technically, that is beating the game, right? as I said before, these are usually done by exploiting glitches and breaking the game, which require superhuman ability (or a good emulator)...

so, anyone else have any good TAS vids worth sharing? if so, feel free Wink

Ah I knew of this method of beating Yellow, however I believe it falls more under the category of 'bug exploitation' than a TAS run Tongue

I've seen a few of these runs before, and I have to be honest I think I prefer watching non-assisted runs. I believe they're a lot more down to player skill and less about exploiting an emulator.

Some of them are truly mad though. Try getting your head around this run of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, in just under half an hour. The player controls both Sonic and Tails:

Sure makes it entertaining, but kinda defeats the point of a speedrun doesn't it? At least you won't end up spending too long procrastinating on YouTube if they're all 2 minutes long! Tongue

I spent Friday night going through all the sonic videos and reclaiming my youth!
