I recently bought a PS1 game from Ebay that arrived today. It was listed as Very Good condition with no scratches on the discs. However I found a few. They probably won't hurt the game any and it's not like it isn't fixable (I don't think...) but I would like to check these discs before my time for a refund/return runs out. So my question is can I, say, put in disc 2 without finishing disc 1? Is there any way to make sure all discs work? Thanks Smile

in most cases, you can boot a game with any disc, but as soon as you go to load your file, it will ask you to insert the disc you are currently on.
However, I can think of one game you can load up either disc first. Resident Evil 2 can be initially loaded up with either disc 1 or 2, but whatever disc you load up first is the disc you play on until you beat it or start a new game

So it's alright to check all the discs as long as I don't load a save or anything? So I could start playing on disc 2 or something...? Smile

ok, I could have better phrased it when I said "load your file", but that basically includes starting a new game.
well, in any case, hopefully the game works for ya.

Hehe. Essentially the starting screen from a boot up of any disk is the same. A standard RPG will bring you to the title screen with "New Game" and "Load Game" (sometimes Options). Selecting to start a new game will just tell you to insert disk 1. Load will bring you to your saved games which are all set to whatever disks they are on. In which case selecting one will prompt that disk.

But no Tongue No skipping forward!

Might I add that testing disks is extremely important if you ever buy Final Fantasy 8. Disk 4 is soooo prone to issues for some reason (brand new).

Actually, I just bought FF8 in Like New condition Smile How will I be able to check it if it's "prone to issues" and what kind of issues are there?

The only real way to find out if your game is damaged beyond the title screen, other than checking the disc for physical damage, is to play through. I've never experienced issues on disc 4 (I've completed FFVIII three times, using the same copy of the game for about ten years), so I can't comment on that, but the only way you'll know for sure is to play the game.

Of course, any damage that prevents the game from starting at all can be tested - put the disc in, if the opening cutscene doesn't play or the title screen doesn't show, then you know you have an issue. The game should run fine with small surface scratches.

It's really easy to detect, if you turn on the Playstation with Disk 4 in, it will give an error and not even start up. "Format not recognized" or something. So if Disk 4 loads, you're fine.

@Kevio17:
The issue I'm referring to was a manufacturing issue or something. Like a batch that shipped bad. Not really a deterioration. So no worries Smile

I sorry to seem like a troll here but these issues are why I bought the old PS1 games off PSN. No disk hassles ever.
