Hi Everyone,
As some of you already know the nintendo 3ds is about to be released in America. On nintendo's officials site it says that the system has "backwards compatibility", but it is region locked. So the question that is bugging me, is whether I can still play normal Ds games; like Tales of Hearts/Innocence/ or Tempest on the 3DS.

Thank You ^^

Yes, you can. All Nintendo 3DS systems can play all Nintendo DS games. However, they cannot be played with the 3D function on, as they were not originally programmed to use it. You are not able to play Nintendo 3DS games on any of the Nintendo DS systems though. Keep that in mind, and you should be good!

You mean because Hearts, Innocence and Tempest were all only released in Japan that maybe they wouldn't work on the 3DS since its region locked unlike the DS. Well I highly doubt Nintendo would make the Backwards Compatibility on the DS region locked seeing as the DS itself is region free. They would actually have to go to the effort of making it region locked, it would be kinda counter productive if you ask me.

Though it really bugs me that the 3DS is region locked as it means if I buy a 3DS in Australia (when the price actually becomes reasonable) I can't buy any of the cool Japanese games that never make it over here. Or even some of the games that make it to America, but not to Europe. Why Nintendo?! Why?!

I don't think it can identify region lock for DS games. I may be wrong, but I'm almost positive it can't.

Eh, hackers will fix that within the first week or so.
