Is the single console future truly feasible?

I would say no. At least not in any of our lifetimes. A single console future, in my opinion, would be unhealthy for the industry as a whole. Multiple consoles create competitiveness. And competitiveness creates better games. The everlasting desire to 1up the competition is one of the main reasons why games continue to get better and better as time progesses. It's the same reason that the Wii has so many bad games. It's because it lacks a true competitor. Hopefully Natal and Move remedy that situation.

But anyways, do any of you feel that a one console future really is a possibility? And if so, would it really be a good thing?

Dont think it will ever happen, in any industry there has to be competition, and everyone is out there to make money so I dont think anyone will give up even if have the least amount of sales in the industry like Sony! Big Grin

A business needs competion for it to improve its products. So i think it would be a bad idea for there to be one console even though i think it would never happen.

Of course there won't be a one console future for two reasons. You've already pointed out the first- that you need competition to drive an industry and improve it. But secondly and kinda more importantly- it's illegal for a company to have a monopoly in an industry, so you couldn't have a one console future without breaking the law.

I don't think there only being one console would be considered a monopoly. Games have many definitions and platforms. Even if there was only one console, there would still be PC, portable, and browser based games. Those are all "Video games." The one console future has been predicted on more than one occasion without any mention of the possibilities of a monopoly.

a Monopoly is not conceivable in a market this big, as the previous poster said, you'll still have a portable and browser/facebook games, PC gaming will always exist for hardcore simulation style games like, railroad and flight sims.

Plus the Wii essentially created a separate market of lower brow gaming so to speak with a bunch of mini game collections and has proven that with the right vehicle any new control scheme is conceivable

On top of which, despite sony's losses i'm sure they'll be in the black all in all by the time the ps4 releases. Microsoft certainly isnt giving in after all the progress they've made this generation as well, so no I don't see it happening or being feasible, the market simply won't allow it

I dont think there'll ever be a one-console future. Like what everyone else has said about competition and such, but also....

I think it would be the complete opposite. We had three mega big game console companies - Microsoft, Nintendo & Sony. There's another big computing company out there, that we never know could make their own gaming console. Apple. Ok, so Macs aren't that good for gaming, but the iPod/Phone have lil gaming apps which i know aren't the same, but there's the possibility in the future.
And who's to say there aren't other lil companies that maybe just one day, will make an outstanding gaming console to compete with the ones out there already Smile

I hope not. Competition is what forces companies to make really good products, and without that, the console would be crap. :/ Imagine if the only console today was the Wii... ...yeah. It would probably be that bad.

A single console could happen. You cannot say that 'it is agains the law because these are all worldwide companies. A certain country may make it illegal to sell a certain product, but that doesn't mean the rest of them will.

That's not to say that I believe it will happen, but there is a chance. Even though there are likely to be even more competitors in the future, there is always the possibility that one company would gain a dominance stronger than the ps2's, and force all other companies out of business. The Dreamcast is dead proof of that.

If we had console that had very little flaws and everything was great about such as most of the games and online service, then it a single console future would be feasbile. Otherwise, I think they will always be enough demand for different consoles, from gamers who typically grip this console they own. The Wii, while it has been way on top in the sales, for a long time now, its often critizied for lacking hard-core games and bad graphics. So that's why still see the 360 and PS3 still in the marketplace.
