So long as you played them back in the day, it's not so difficult to play them now... But if you don't have that nostalgia factor, then older games are usually difficult to get into. But there is a cut off point. I mean, for me, games that are pre-PS1 are really great to play and have that retro feel. Whereas, PS1 games, which arguably should be closer to what we have now, are clunky and awkward. I think it's because you go into them with the mindset that they're "next gen" and hit the stumbling block. Some PS2 games are already like this too.

But I have to say that so long as a game didn't have "impressive" graphics when it came out, then it looks better now. That is to say, if it wasn't trying to be realistic in the first place, it doesn't look so much of a failure by today's standards.

Anyway, I'm not really contributing to the conversation of the thread here, just rambling. XD

I don't know if this has been mentioned but I don't think the original Final Fantasy has aged well. I recently bought it for my NES, and ended up turning off in disgust after 10 minutes of playtime. I ended up buying the GBA Dawn of Souls.

Gameplay? Graphics? Difficulty?

I don't get what you expecting from the NES version.

Well, I'd say let him explain himself before jumping down his throat, but if I were to guess his biggest problem

Quote:4 Imps appear
Turn 1
Warrior 1 attacks Imp A, 10 dmg, Monster Slain
Warrior 2 attacks Imp A, Ineffective
Warrior 3 attacks Imp A, Ineffective
Imp B attacks Warrior 1, 3 dmg
Imp C attacks Warrior 1, 1 dmg
Warrior 4 attacks Imp A, Ineffective, You just wasted a good turn trying to kill 1 imp with 4 warriors Tongue
Imp D attacks Warrior 1, 2 dmg, and just because we want to rub it in... how about Warrior Slain

ok, that's a little over the top, but still, that could be the problem. At which point, I could see his plight

For some reason when I tried Oblivion (yes, you heard me right- Elder Scrolls IV) I got the feeling that I was playing a game that was unbearable when it was released in, let's say, 1995 and had aged so horribly that nobody should be subjected to it in this modern age. The only problem is that someone had the nerve to push it out the door in 2007.

@Zero: Yeah, you guessed right. The battle mechanics is mainly what hasn't aged well. The graphics don't bother me, and the difficulty isn't that bad.

Final Fantasy VII. Not because of the graphics (Well, partially, but they aren't that big of a deal), but because the control scheme involving the D-pad is so annoying now, atleast for me. Plus, by today's standards, the translation is pretty mediocre.

Yea, I feel ya at that point. I love the NES version, but the battle mechanics do get on my nerves sometimes. What you need is the PS1 version. Its the closest to the NES version without dumbing it down. It fixes a lot of the bugs from the NES version, and even gives you an option for auto-targeting

After the release of the Xbox 360, the first current gen console, I don't think ANY game reviewers should give more than half a full score (5/10, 2/4, etc) for the graphics of any game on the Wii. ANY game. There's no excuse. All other aspects aside of course, but just the graphics should not be given free passes.

Let me give you an example.

Uncharted 2 gets a 10 on graphics from IGN.
So does Mario Galaxy 2.

So what the hell does a "10" mean?

And if they're just going to say "Well it's a really good WII looking title with great graphics, period"

I say,

well what does Wii compete with? Ps3 and 360 no? So when you compare, how exactly are those 10/10 Mario Galaxy graphics against Uncharted 2's?
