Somehow, when I was in work today.. I have somehow lost everything on my Macbook pro Sad
It was completely switched off and nobody was in my house to "fiddle" with it.
I've lost all my applications, all my files, music, photos, college work, art work that I've done over the past few years, everything!
It's been completely wiped down to the raw OS..

I have a few things backed up on an external drive, but not all my applications and art work.
Anyone have any ideas how it could have happened when it was switched off?
I'm pissed off!

Seems the Mac isn't infalible after all, have you checked online to see if someone has had a similar issue Omen?
Doesn't sound like your files will be recovered though which sucks, sorry man :/

Well, thank god that I plugged in my external HDD yesterday... It seems to have done a quick "time machine" automatically without me realising, so it just took about 2-3 hours to get everything back to what it was.

Always back up your data people lol Big Grin

...but Phew. I'm going to try and find out what happened, strange.

Congrats on getting all your stuff back to normal, Omen.

Hell, that's worrying.

Glad your stuff is OK, Omen.

For anyone who is interested, I found out what the problem was by talking to an apple representative. Apparently I seem to have got attacked by a rootkit.

"A collection of tools (programs) that enable administrator-level access to a computer or computer network.
This allows the unauthorised user to hide files that are being changed from the operating system"

When I logged into my account it was like I had just got the laptop back from the store, everything was gone except the basic programs.

I got rid of it with my CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) back-up.. I was able to wipe everything from the entire HDD and migrate everything back to what it was before the rootkit had been installed.
Also, because it was attacking my entire network, the same thing happened to my PS3 ( A virus maybe.....??) with (only) my friend list being erased.
All I had to do for that was just delete the account on my PS3 and create another one and just sign back up to PSN using the same account info as before and everything returned.

I have since got a programme for my mac that can scan for & remove rootkits. (OS X Rootkit Hunter)

It's funny, but nothing happened to the 2 other PC's in the house lol

^^ Well Macs have always been hackable, its just no one bothered before. Now they're more popular than ever, though, so the tempation for hackers is there.
