PS3 or 360?

So I realize that this topic has likely been discussed on here before, but my question is of a more specific nature. I may, in the near future, have the opportunity to acquire one of the above consoles, but not both. We already own a Wii, but that's more better for party games than solo games.

There are a lot of great games that are available for both consoles (Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, Final Fantasy XIII, etc.), but there are also games that are console-specific (Halo and Fable for 360, MSG for PS3, etc.)

There are things that I like and dislike about both consoles. I like the fact that the PS3 has wireless networking built in, and I don't have to pay extra for some silly accessory just to get online (using an ethernet cord is not an option for me unfortunately). Also, I'm not too interested in paying to play online, even though the general consensus is that the XBox 360 online network is far superior to the PS3.

In addition, since I already have a PSP, it would be nice to be able to sync my PSP up to a PS3 and transfer saves and such back and forth. Also, the blue-ray player is a nice touch, since DVDs are bound to fade out eventually just like the VHS.

So pretty much, I feel like I would enjoy the game experience more with a 360, but I like the added features and the pricing (considering accessories and online play) a little better on the PS3. Please convince me in one direction or the other, thanks!

Both excel very well at a gaming experience and the XBox is catching up in the media center area.

If gaming is the primary focus of the purchase, Microsoft has a better line-up of games to Sony. Sony has great games as exclusives but they can be factored to zero when you look at Microsofts exclusives.

As a media hub, I much prefer the Sony PS3. I have used a friend's XBox 360 and it just doesn't feel as natural as the XMB (Sony OS). For a personal hub that includes using the internet, storing and showing movies and pictures I much prefer the PS3.

On-Line capabilities are similar in my opinion. My rommate at college had a 360 with Halo 3, I had Killzone 2. We had a race and the PS3 found a match first. Both being join a game whatever it may be. But sometimes it was a hit or miss as they were not dedicated game servers but hosted games. So if someone had a lousy connection it was a lousy game. The XBox LIVE had a pretty good game consistency overall.

The controller debate is your choice and yours alone. Don't forget your friends in the choice as that is becoming a prevelent emphasis in games now. If I wasn't semi-bilangual in Japanese, I would be having a 360 no doubt. Since I have FFXIII, End of Eternity, Tales of Vesperia all lined up for winter/spring (Thanks Blu-Ray).

I mean, I'd obviously say PS3... Tongue but seriously, if you aren't bothered so much about XBox LIVE then I would say the PS3 is a better bet. It has a more promising games line-up to look forward to, IMO, and in terms of performance has better potential in the future as well.

ok, first off, I'm gonna go with noting that Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi puts no stock in the PS3. Now that is not the best form of argument, but I felt it worth mentioning.

The 360 and PS3 both have good qualities and bad.....

PS3 Pros
free online gameplay
Web browser
all models come with a hard drive
Gran Turismo 5 (ok, thats only something that people like me and gil would care about)
Sync with PSP

360 pros
Well organized online content
Voice and Text over XBL
Blue Dragon, Fable 2, Halo 3, Gears of War (ok... so not all these games are choice to everyone, but i figured i'd just throw them out)
Good for shooters
Play music while playing games (you can even sync up your iPod to the 360, but only music you uploaded from MP3 format work)

PS3 cons
Too pricy
no text and voice chat over PSN (thats what i had originally heard, don't know for sure)
too pricy
Kills 360s (do not leave a PS3 and 360 on at the same time in an entertainment cabinet)
too pricy
need to buy an accessory to get your PS2 and PS1 files onto the system
too pricy

360 cons
Red Ring of Death
Subscription fees for XBL Gold membership

No, Rubes. You can't play "Pokémon Snap" on PlayStation. You can play "Ape Escape,"

Specifically in terms of games, the PlayStation 3 has a lot more to offer this year than the Xbox 360.

With regards to other stuff though, it's a much closer competition.

Nice double post there gilburtgtr Tongue
I won't stoop to fanbiased arguements this time lol

To Lefty:
Flip a coin............I'm serious

I can rightly say i play my 360 much more than my PS3 because my friends are on 360, not on PS3. What you should be looking at is the types of games YOU want and what YOU want out of the console. I can argue that the PS3 doesn't have a HDMI cable out the box or that it doesn't come with a headset or i could say that the 360 doesn't have WiFi and that you have to pay to play online.
Ask yourself, what do your friends play on?
I see you mention being able to have a Blu-Ray player, i disagree with DVD fading out that quickly what with prices of Blu-Ray films being somewhat extortionate but if you want that then get it. The PS3 has some really good features and is a powerhouse when it comes to the potential of the console. But is all that power any good when all you want to do is play games? The power of a PS3 or 360 is irrelevant, if you want a game such as MGS or you wanted say Gears of War, which would you like better?
The arguement between the 360 and PS3, 'which one is better' will go on til the next generation but it all depends on what YOUR interested in.
If you want to play with your friends and they are on 360 then get a 360, if they are on PS3 then get that. Personally if your interested in syncing your PSP and downloading some games for it then i'd go for the PS3. You can always save up for a 360 later if you wanted one because the 360 is at a realistic price (had to show some fanboy opinion) but seriously it doesn't matter which one is better, it matters what you want out of it.

OK, time to pick some nits.

Other 360 cons:
More annoying noobs on LIVE
Having to have a wired controller or change AA batteries every few hours
Needing a large number of discs for FF XIII

The PS3 is pricey, but you have to remember that Sony are being reasonable, they are making a loss on each one. What you are paying for is the BR player. In terms of text chat, it depends what you mean. There is a perfectly usable messaging system, but no IM if that's what you mean. It is very likely that there is going to be a firmware update soon to bring backwards compatibility to all PS3s, too.

More annoying 'noobs'?
I hate to say it but i've come across a lot more team-killing and smack talk on PS3 than i have 360
The PS3 controller has to be charged via cable so thats not an issue exclusive to 360
More discs for FFXIII? big deal, FFVII had 3 discs, FFVIII had 4 if i remember correctly, this wasn't an issue then so why make it one now?

At least you were correct on the 'pricey' point
Blu-Ray is not exactly a good thing, 6 times the quality of picture for in some cases 6 times the price (Ghostbusters on DVD = £3, Blu-Ray = £20)
I agree there is a messaging system although it is tedious, 360 wins on communication i'm afraid
The backwards compatability is a smart move, i can't pick at that really aside from how the PS3 originally with this feature was £100 extra but now its available in an update for free, kinda makes me wonder how else Sony are screwing their console owners.

I will say that both of these are not the system of choice, you must play sega saturn!

But in all seriousness. Both systems are great in their own ways. PS3 does have wireless built into the systems. I have both and I will admit I had to pay $100 for the wireless adapter for 360. I found the 360's wireless was much better, but if the walls in your house arnt super thick I feel that the ps3's would have been better. You do pay for Xbox live but as they say you get what you pay for. (i saw some of the best buys in lex had the elite 360 with halo 3 and fable 2 bundled). PS3 has the bluray player which is a plus and the dpad is so much better for fighting games. Free online is good, plus ps1 classics. Remote play is ok but I'm having issues with mine right now. The newer systems cant play ps2 games although I hear sony is trying to work on this. It would seem in the end you'd probably be paying the same price for both. Really it should come down to what you and your friends play and the games you like the most.
