I've never played that game, and I don't know if it was really worth my time. I know they rereleased it on the PS2, but is it really worth it to buy it? Was it that good of a game? Were there any major drawbacks? Is the story that important??

I haven't gotten the PS2 version, but the GBA version filled in some of the gaps between the first and second games.

It's not that bad if you don't expect the same level of quality as the console games.

Playing as Riku? Really? lol. That's awesome. I know it tied up the loose ends, but how was the battle system??

Personally, I enjoyed the battle system, for it being a card based system.
Unfortunately, you cannot play as Riku until after you beat the game with Sora, and once you do play as Riku, you have no control over the cards you have in his deck, but it works out usually.

I personally think it's worth it to get both Chain of Memories and Re:Chain of Memories ^_^ Like the others said it fills in some of the gaps between KH and KH2, you get to play as Riku, and the battle system is interestingly different lol. I enjoyed what they added to Re:CoM, and if you have CoM you have a KH game that you can play where ever you go! ^.^

I bought Re:CoM when it came out and was on sale. I really want to play and I've been trying, but I can never get over the battle system.

I don't like the battle system, but i suppose its nice to have some difference in the way you fight.

I you really enjoy the story of kh1 & 2, then i'd play it, like the others have said it fills in the gaps, though its not a disaster if you dont play it, because there's no sort of mention of it in kh2 (for reasons i know, but that reason sucks!)
