Would FFVI really work as a Nintendo DS game?

Due to the DS remake of FFIV, a lot of people have fangasmed over the idea of a FFVI DS remake. But, could that really work?

FFVI was the first game in the "original" series of games that turned away from the small, "squished" sprites, and instead used sprites that were taller than the previous games.

This allowed for much more interaction with enviroment. Characters "jumped" when they were suprised, or had various facial expressions not seen in previous Final Fantasy games. Such as Kefka's infamous "jumping" when he got annoyed at various times during the game. Or when the characters jumped when they traveled in the cranes during a few select parts during the game.

I just can't see how that can translate to the DS, without "losing" a part of what made it special in the first place. It worked easily for FFIV, since that game had "static" characters in that sense, but it's much different in FFVI's case.

Well, they did do the FFVI tech demo for the PSOne (if I remember correctly) and the models looked pretty cool.

That was in-battle only, though. Wink

The new cutscenes et al for FFIV look rather stunning, I don't see why FFVI wouldn't be the same.

I do understand what you're getting at though, and honestly I think it's a problem for all games that are remade and brought "up to date". Things that get "fixed" are always things that were part of the original game's charm, and in fact, I think it's pretty rare to find a game these days that has what you'd call charm.

As always, I'm all for bringing these games to a newer audience, but that will always be at the price of losing that je ne sais quoi.

Basically, due to the new sprite ratio FFVI used, it allowed for them to "move", which couldn't be done in FFI-FFV.

I just see trying to do that in a 3D game would be harder. Jumping Kefka would be kinda odd in 3D, IMHO, as an example.

As they keep the story straigth I think they can. Why not? Look at FFIII they remade a NES-game into a DS-game. perfectly possible.

Considering that the new FF1 for PSP had taller sprites, I was thinking that it might go to the PSP. Sony might outsell Nintendo by the time it is announced and Squeenix might make it for Sony. they would also be able to have better graphical capabilities and possibly voice acting.

He WILL jump (hopefully) so the should have no problem doing it. It just won't be as funny I guess.
