Will Star Wars: The Old Republic Mark BioWare's First Major Failure?

The Old Republic was announced with a sort of trailer fanfare that blew away gamers and Star Wars fans alike on just about every level imaginable. With multiple Sith emerging from a crashed Republic dropship, dozens of Jedi slamming into a massive sprawling melee and a female bounty hunter complete with a jet pack, it's hard to imagine if what BioWare could have added to the teaser, save for making a feature length movie.

This would be epic if it were a single player game.

When i first heard about this game i was shocked to hear that it was MMO. Even though it would be interesting for it to be one, i just feel as though it would of been better for it to be a single player option too.

I am leaving WoW behind for this game, and I'm not alone. I think it looks spectacular. Wow has just become so easy and stale, I can't stand it, so I can't wait for a new MMORPG, not to mention; STAR WARS Big Grin

Also, who cares about end game. Do you realise that the majority of players are not playing to reach endgame. We're playing to enjoy the game and the Star Wars experience.

So many of us are going to be coming back each day, month after month and enjoying this game. I think you are the one misunderstanding things. Bioware is going to create a truly awesome game which will be a good competition towards World of Warcraft.

Hey if you want to disagree, by all means, but why should others be ashamed of their opinions? I could very well say the same to you! I agree, BioWare has time and again pushed out really good games, majority of which have been single player games. On that note, regardless of developer, a game still has the potential to flop, no matter how many successful ones were released before it.

From your comments, it's clear that you've never touched an MMO before: endgame not important? Certainly, if it was a single player game, but it's not. If you're playing only for story, BioWare might as well make it a single player experience. After all, you'll be paying a monthly sub for a game that has no longevity (assuming that it's a monthly sub, even BioWare has yet to detail the subscription model for TOR).

Since BioWare's developing this as an MMO and if there's nothing to keep players coming back for more, who are all the while paying a monthly subscription, I find it hard to believe that anyone with a good deal of common sense would continue paying for a single player game under the guise of an MMO.

Nobody's saying it's set in stone, but based on the info and impressions from BioWare, it's a perfectly sound conclusion that TOR doesn't look like it's going to be a successful MMO in the long run, something a lot of other MMOs on the market have suffered from.

Personally, I hope BioWare just puts out more information to clear up the fog. I love Star Wars, but I'm not putting my money into a game if there's no real reason to do so. I would sooner get Dragon Age II considering I know more about that than TOR.

What makes you think it's not going to be a successful MMO?
  • Lack of endgame. I dunno, maybe it's just me, but usually with an MMO you'd want to be able to return to it even after beating the 'end boss'.
  • Nothing that really sets it apart from other MMOs on the market, aside from full VA and a story driven experience.
  • Which leads me to my next point, it may be better off as a single player game. Again, I iterate: monthly sub for a single player game?
  • MMO market is starting to get saturated: WoW, GW2, Aion, EvE, FFXIV, DC Universe, Tera, Blade & Soul, etc.
  • The only people that are hard up for TOR are really just Star Wars fans. Your average MMO player will likely try, but it's doubtful they'll stick around.

Again, not saying it's fact, just the impression that I'm getting Smile

I'd totally get it as a single-player game. My personal issue with MMO's is the paying mechanism, if I buy credit for a month, it'll run out whether I play or not. I have a fulltime job and sometimes no time (or need) to game for a week, so the money would go to waste.

Concerning the game, I think it'll have a hard stand
(a) with the Bioware fans who are definitely spoilt with Dragon Age and Mass Effect, having high expectations (naturally)
(b) within the market of MMO's that already contain such a large number of games available.

Smile
