What reasons do you have for buying long-going series? This now excludes Final Fantasy. The only one for me is Pokemon, which I'm a little addicted to, even though I haven't played Generation IV series for 2 years. I only buy it to critique it.

What Darryl said, the Metal Gear saga is pretty much the only on-going series that has kept me so engrossed with its lore. The fact that the story carries throughout the entire series (a very old series in comparison to other games) is pretty darn impressive.

I'm still buying Broken Sword games... Even though the last one was kinda crap. I loved the first two games so dearly, that it makes me want to continue supporting the series.

I also want to support the 2D point & click genre which it started out as, although it morphed into an action game in 3D.

I've been playing the Prince of Persia : Sands of Time series for a long while. I didn't play until until years after its initial release though... After I played the first one, I was instantly hooked.. The Prince's character was awesome and I loved the puzzles. Since then I played the other two, Two Thrones and Warrior Within. Then I saw that they were making a Prince of Persia game for the next gen and I decided hey... it's Prince of Persia.. HAS to be good. Borrowed it from the library... played about 10 hours... got extremely bored and gave it back. ugh.. it was just so unlike the Prince of Persia games I once knew and loved and it just tore my heart to shreds.. *cries* I also watched a bit of The Forgotten Sands and even that seemed like a rushed mess of a game. The story wasn't even remotely relevant to what happened in the original 3 and it seemed like they even took a step back from a graphics standpoint.. I loved my Sands of Time series.. I will keep loving my Sands of Time series. I did play through the DMC and GoW series.. but it just didn't hold a candle to Prince of Persia for me.

I buy the Dragon Quest/Warrior games because I know exactly what I'm getting. There is no chance that it'll be terrible or blow me away, because it's just the same game before it with new characters and a more refined battle system.

That, and they're always pretty.

I buy the Ace Combat series because I like flying and I know that this is the only game series that knows how to make flying fun on the consoles. And it's fast pace action...and I love it...
