I wonder how many Linux users there are around Gaming Union? I know that a certain David from FXN is an Ubuntu supporter, but who else? I just started using Ubuntu 10.10, which I run on my netbook but boot straight from my USB stick, which is really convenient if I want to boot my Ubuntu somewhere else. The interface is more intuitive than I initially expected it would be, and now I have gotten to grips with the new OS I've realised that I haven't even scratched the surface in terms of the potential of Linux. I love the utter crazy customisability of it, and its efficiency (the whole OS is less than 2GB on my USB stick, and runs really smoothly in terms of the CPU and RAM, even with a small 1.66 GHz Intel Atom processor).
If anyone is yet to give it a go, I would highly recommend it. Smile

1.66 Intel Atom?
You must be using an eeePC or some form of Netbook...

I tried using Ubuntu on my desktop on a partitioned space, but according to some research, aparently my mobo doesnt support ubuntu....FAIL

I use my computer to do fun stuff.
I don't consider spending hours to try and make stuff work much fun. Tongue

^ Ha, it didn't take too much setting up actually. I initially had a problem with the Windows Wireless Driver setup to get my WiFi, but I guess it all depends on what you consider "fun" anyway. Tongue There're plenty of cool things to do with Ubuntu, particularly aesthetically, that I found relatively fun to mess with. Wink

Tongue Aw that sucks, I can't say I've come across that before (I am fairly new to the game tbf), it has worked on whichever PC I have tried to boot it on so far. How old is your system?

It's not the actual using of Ubuntu that's the problem.
It's when you want to do something simple like install WinAmp or something like that which the problems happen.

Something that should take 10 minutes on Windows/Mac can take well over 3 hours to get working on Ubuntu. And sure, if you're a bit of a computer geek, then you will absolutely love doing that... But for me, I'd rather take those 10 minutes to install and then listen to music for 3 hours instead. XD

^ I'd agree with you there, though I can't say I've had too many problems with regards to installing with 10.10; the Ubuntu Software Centre makes things quite easy, and has a nice selection of high quality Linux freeware that installs in minutes, usually. But it's not for everyone, certainly.

Have you used the Ubuntu version where you dont actually install the OS on the HDD?

That's what I do. ^ But there isn't a separate version for that, you can simply install the full Ubuntu desktop version onto a USB stick (or, in fact, a CD) and run it straight from the stick. I have a 16GB stick, but you can do it from a 2GB one if you want, the whole OS is that small. It is very useful if you do want to have your own desktop and files on one system but use multiple computers, as you can just plug the USB stick into pretty much any PC and choose to boot from that drive instead of the HDD. Then all your files and programs and settings will be there waiting for you.
It might be worth trying that if you want Jux, I don't know whether it'll still give you the motherboard problem or not. Just follow the instructions on the Ubuntu site; 'swhat I did. Smile

The reason i ask is because I have tried so many times, and it just wont work. Changed soo many bios settings, USB sticks and images. I can understand the desktop not working, but my eeePC... WTH! Sad

I have followed the instructions on the ubuntu site, and gone through so many forums, but again, still no luck...

I might just be really unlucky. Sad

It should work on an eeePC surely? All I did was download the 32-bit ISO file from ubuntu.com, then the Universal USB Installer from pendrivelinux.com (as per the instructions on the website) and installed it on my memory stick. Now all I have to do is quickly press the boot menu button when my computer is loading (it varies from PC to PC irritatingly, it's usually F2, F6, F7, F11, F12, on mine it's Esc, which took ages to find :/), and choose to boot from the USB drive instead of the HDD.
I don't know what to suggest really I'm afraid Jux. If you're that desperate to get Ubuntu, you can Internet Relay Chat with a bunch of geeks that know what they're talking about. See here.
