How's that for an alliteration?

Alright, so school's out, that means I have more time to work on some creative stuff (ironic, considering I'm attending an art university) in addition to all the usual GU and Union related stuff. I'll try my best to update this corner of the creative forums with all my doodles, works-in-progress as well as more finished stuff. I haven't paid much attention to deviantART lately and for good reason, but I won't bore you with that

Comments and critiques are most welcome, so are ideas, concepts and just plain conversation I thoroughly encourage throwing ideas back and forth if you have any!



First up, one of the only pieces that I've done during my first year of study that I'm actually satisfied with, so to speak. What I did was I picked out a couple of old vinyl record labels and drew/painted over them. The concept was transformation and chance I first layered over each label with gel medium, let it sit to dry and then sanded off several areas. Then I proceeded to draw over them.

I threw a couple of ideas back and forth with my friends and settled on doing superheroes and villains. It worked out quite well and I'm particularly happy with Two Face Mediums used include graphic/brush pens and acrylic paint. I also went back with a scalpal/X-acto knife and scratched out bits and pieces to create a set of marks and textures.

It's basically finished at this point, but do let me know what you guys and gals think! What I can do to improve it or what other similar ideas would make for an interesting composition.

Great work but i feel as though the superman one could of been more interesting because it's a great portrait but there is nothing that would make me stop and stare. Me personaly i think a action pose would of been better. The wonder woman pieace is my favourite out of the four but i would of liked to have seen more of the whip. The could of been much more in your face.

The Bat girl pic is your best one because it's more interesting and the compistion is dynamic but it would of been better if you had some of it moving out of the blue border because it just looks very restricted by that border. Now the only problem i have for the two face picture is that the hand just looks very...strange and uncomfortable. Plus i'm surprised you did not do anything with the type, considering typography by itself can look very beautiful. I hope this is fine.

Any chance of getting a better photo of so i can get a better look at it?

From what i see i think is this.

1. You know your colour theory which is good

2. You have your own look i see.

3. I don't like how wonder women is dead on in the middle of the page and the pose could be more dynamic maybe to make it look more interesting look at?

4. The superman one could say use purple and green for darker areas. Black makes the colours look dirty i think.

5. more tone for the superman one?

6. Batgirl one i think needs a story to it i think and this would make the eye travel around the page.

8. Now the two face one i say once again more tone?

9. Pose is fine i think

These pieces of work are certainly not crap but there is nothing wrong with pushing them a bit further. Hope you are not mad for what i have said.

I love Two-Face...but Superman's boring. There's nothing that makes Superman stand out. He's just...there.

Oooh i have finally arrived at THE creative corner of the one, the only... COMMANDER COLON!! XD Thats great that you have some free time and posting more of your art is a great idea!! I love your art, its just amazing, and yet there is so much more to see... This piece of art that you have up now is interesting, i especially love the textures and color scheme/theme... great job!! @bingo: I totally agree, I was searching all around for a record label that might fit that description, but to no avail Had to work with what I had. If I could've found more dynamic poses, that would've been great. As for Two Face, yeah, the hand is awkward, the idea was to replicate Uncle Sam's iconic I Want You pose, then I realized it was Two Face and flipping a coin would've been more appropriate. Thus, it went back and forth between those two ideas.

@MSJ: I had the same issue with Wonder Woman as I did with Superman, no ideal record labels to work with. That was the best one that I'd found. As for the shading, Superman has hints of red and purple peeking through the blue, the shadow isn't black, it's a bluish-purple. I blame my camera Thanks for your critique, I really appreciate it.

I'm gonna have to go pick this up from school before I can take more pics. It's currently on show until the end of this week.

Awesome sketch Colin! Very tight anatomy and even as a static pose it has a dynamic quality to it.

As a Kingdom Hearts fan I like the extra belts(or as I like to call them: disutility belts).
