Quote:With the rise of smartphones and the sector eating up more and more of the market pie, both Sony and Nintendo are certainly "hurt" from the competition, according to GLM Games' Graeme Devine - who previously worked with Apple. By the end of last year, iOS and Android's share of the portable gaming market had grown to a significant 34 percent, almost double that of 2009's market share.

I have to agree with this...but hey, at least Nintendo and Sony are hopefully learning how to combat the problem...Microsoft on the other hand has no clue...

I think it's important to bear in mind that the definition of a portable game has changed since iOS and Android devices have become more prominent. Games on smartphones are short and snappy, mostly designed to pass 5 minutes here or there and many use simple cartoony graphics like those we've been used to in free online flash games for years. Sony and Nintendo's offerings are proper portable gaming consoles - real games with real stories and real graphics designed to give the player a much deeper gaming experience. To suggest that iOS and Android have substantially eaten into this part of the market is a bit of a stretch.
Another thing to consider is that the market for portable devices and portable 'gaming' has also boomed in the last year or two, so although smartphones have taken a larger market share, the market is bigger too, so there isn't a lot to suggest that Sony or Nintendo have been "hurt" at all by the new prominence of smartphones.
