It's quite easy to see that Snow just wants to look out for everyone. There's nothing cocky about that, he's just caring. The more the game goes on, the more you can see that he's just a good guy, not an arrogant or cocky one. How he deals with Hope throughout just shows his character. Hope's hate towards him doesn't stop him attempting to protect him. If he were this arrogant and cocky guy people claim him to be, he'd have tried to turn it back on hope and acted like it was his fault, or attempted to pass the buck. He did neither of those things.
It's also ironic that you highlight Lightning and Hope as good examples too, as almost everything they do specifically revolves around themselves. They're extremely selfish and rarely have anything positive or constructive to say. If anything, Lightning is the arrogant one. She believes she knows best, even though she rarely has a plan and often doesn't even know what she's doing.
Perhaps arrogant is not the word I'm looking for, and I never directly said he was arrogant. Lightning is not being intentionally selfish. She just doesn't trust anyone else to protect her sister. Moreover, she blames Snow for what happened to Serah. Hope on the other, wants revenge. Revenge is inherently a selfish thing. Lightning's way of thinking is different from Snow's in that she often knows what she's getting into, and acknowledges the obstacles first. In other words, Lightning, more often than not, looks before she leaps. Snow, on the other hand, leaps in headfirst not caring about the consequences. While he's driven by his love, it's still recklessness. If Snow and Lightning's combat tactics existed in the same mindset, the person would be an excellent strategist.
OK, Snow is not bad. I just don't like people who are trying to take everything unto themselves. Hope points this out, and says that is the reason his mother died (which is not in the slightest true). Snow is also selfish, in that respect, in a rather esoteric manner. He acts like he's the only one who's fighting for Serah, which is untrue. He acts like he's the only one that cares, and made the mistake of saying Lightning is fighting for herself. Snow makes himself feel like he's alone in the battle, and no one's going to help him, because everyone's fighting for a different reason. I felt throughout the game he was beating up on himself too much, acting like he's alone. That is why I did not like him.
