Quote:When the subject of micro-trasactions come up, it's usually in the form of some drama, with the most recent being EVE Online taking the heat for suggesting that their company may want to search for alternative means of making revenue by implementing the heavily disputed form of sales. But EVE isn't the first game to take the heat, nor is it the first game that thrive off of the sales plan that has players pick and choose what content they would like to buy. Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Team Fortress 2, League of Legends and Dungeons and Dragons Online are just a few of the games that have taken advantage of microtransactions and have flourished as a result. From drawing in millions of dollars overnight to taking a game that was floundering and instead helping it thrive and expand, this new form of pay-to-play is nothing if not a success. So why all the fuss? What exactly are microtransactions and why are they such a big deal to gamers if so many people buy into it?

My experiences with these type of setups has been anywhere from Ultima Online, Ragnarok Online, Panya, and many console titles. While I agree it bites to see someone pop into the game first day and get a jump start to a point that took you a long time; I think it's great to see a company making money. If you enjoy a title, wouldn't you want the company you get your game from stay in business?

My only exception to this is if it ends up being something that hurts the gameplay of those that work purely on elbow grease. Which is almost nil.

I find it odd when people scoff at DLC content like map packs for FPSs, or new campaigns. "Why should I pay for stuff for a game I already bought from them?" Such is the price for their continued development. Do people really expect a company to continue to pay developers to make content for a game?

It's a business, and a business is going to do what is needed to keep the doors open. And for that, I'm all for it.

I'm a huge fan of microtransactions. I may not buy them, but I know servers are expensive, and game development is insanely expensive.
