This would explain why the beta now tells me the activity is 'high' instead of just 'medium' or 'low'. Sadly, the game decided to freeze on me, so I couldn't sign back into PSN since it was about an hour after the European PSN maintenance had started.

Got some good news apparently the Beta has been extended until September 17th, I guess they thought it would be bad to end the beta on the 10 year anniversary of 9/11

You're correct that Ubisoft have extended the beta and released this statement via their forums:
