Consider this: the PSVita offers gaming on a 5" OLED touchscreen and is able to last just as long as the PSP. I'd say that's progress, you're just not looking at it in relative terms.

And if you're like any gamer on the go, you wouldn't be spending 5 hours playing the thing anyway. Playing any handheld device for that amount of time usually means you're at home with the power cable plugged in.

What is disappointing is that it's a built-in battery, whereas with the PSP I can just buy a spare and swap them out if I ever run low on juice.

3-5 is standard gaming battery life. While personally I feel these companies (gaming and computer based) really need to focus more time on battery, Sony isn't in the wrong here.

This was announced way back during E3, so it's no surprise to me. And I'm happy about it. My PSP gives me PLENTY of gametime. And keep in mind that even with the PSP's time estimate, I get more than that pushing down settings.

I do agree with Colin that it sucks you can't have separate batteries, or change for later higher capacity batteries, but what can you do? Just another company punishing everyone for pirater's choices.

If your really worried about the battery life, I just saw a video of Shuhei Yoshida talking about an external battery for the Vita.

I know if I had the Vita I wouldn't be playing the Vita 3-5 hours straight, but for the people who do maybe this external battery is what your asking. for.

I totally agree with Colin (and co.) about the battery life situation. Come on guys, the PSVita is such a step up from the PSP, and it has the same battery life? How is that bad? And who on earth is playing it for 5 hours straight without being at home in any case? Put it in perspective.

As for the built in battery, there are pros and cons. In the PSP you not only buy replacements, but replacements that can hold 3 times as much power or more. However, I was one of the (I'm sure many) victims of a battery disconnection at the wrong time - during an update. I had to pay £20 to have it sorted out, which though reasonable could have been better spent. Built in battery avoids this, as well as being more efficient.

At least they are creating an external battery pack for this, helps with the meager charge capacity.
