You all now what I am talking about here, companies almost completely rely on their old IPs nowadays. For example Nintendo usually depends on mario to sell their system. It is as if the companies forgot that once they had to make new IPs to have IPs to begin with! Give me your thoughts on what games that companies depend on for almost all of their money.

For sure, I think publishers do depend on already established IPs a lot, it makes perfect business sense. Call of Duty is a prime example, it's not necessarily ground breaking, but just with the brand name alone it sells a ton. Square Enix depends on Final Fantasy a lot to the point where they hardly come up with new IPs. Konami depends so much on PES and MGS that they have their own individual categories in their fiscal reports.

The problem for the lack of new IPs isn't really the publishers or devs fault, it's the buyers. People will complain about a lack of original content, but when it's made it usually sells abysmally. Old franchises, however, sell so much regardless of quality. *cough*sonic*cough* If people would like more new and less old, they need to vote with their wallet. This applies not only to the game industry, but to the much superior movie industry as well.

That is all. Thank you.

Yeah unfortunately it is a lot easier to get money from a publisher if their is already a built in audience and guaranteed sales. This isn't necessarily a bad thing but new IPs are often shut down because of it. It is extremely expensive to make games these days, so if the publisher think the risk is outweighing the reward even a little then its game over.

I don't think there's anything wrong with publishers relying a bit on their older franchises, but there has to be a balance. A company like Capcom doesn't strike a good balance, nor do Activision.

When I think of this topic. I do believe that companies do this, especially Nintendo. But the more I think of it, if you have a mascot like Mario which is so recognizable in the gaming scene and even outside of the scene like in pop-culture for example, it does give the company that more of a push for customers to purchase the games.

And I don't think I need to remind you how much Mario has done in the gaming industry.

I don't see PlayStation abusing their past Final Fantasy, they created many great characters this time around like Nathan Drake (hi subway commercial), Resistance had some big advertising that provided a huge boom and presence. I wonder what Microsoft will use, Bungie is fading Halo out of the works right? So Master Chief may be on his last console for a while.
