Ventus, at the end of BBS, is housed inside Sora's heart to recover. When Sora unlocks his heart with Ansem's Oblivion in KH1. Ventus' heart is also released in the process, resulting in the creation of Roxas, who looks like Ventus. The sole reason Roxas can, "feel," is because he was created from Ventus' heart.

I prefer Roxas, because unlike Ventus, he's not as naïve, I feel. However, Ventus is also cool, because Roxas seeks only to fulfill his own motives after leaving the Organization, and Ventus' duty, it seems is only to his friends.
