I'm certainly in favour of trophies. They can make a game more challenging, which I guess can be a good or bad thing. Plus, it gives you the feeling you have achieved something (hence them being called, achievements), when you do something good. I know first hand how annoying it can be trying to get trophies, but they don't make a game worse at all, and in some cases they can make a game better.
