well, lets look at original release data for each game (note: I am using Gamefaqs for refrence, so it might be a little off

FF1: December 18, 1987
FF2: December 17, 1988 (just less then a year)
FF3: April 27, 1990 (about 1 year and 4 months)
FF4: July 19, 1991 (about 1 year and 3 months) and then easytype was released October 29, 1991 (about 3 months later)
FF5: December 6, 1992 (about 1 year and 5 months from the original release of FF4, and 1 year and 2 months from easytype)
FF6: April 2, 1994 (about 1 year and 4 months)
FF7: January 31, 1997 (about 2 years and 9 months)
FF8: February 11, 1999 (about 2 years and 1 month)
FF9: July 7, 2000 (about 1 year and 5 months)
FF10: July 19, 2001 (1 year and 12 days)
FF11: May 16, 2002 (10 months) ::NOTE:: FF9, 10, and 11 were being worked on at the same time
FF12: March 16, 2006 (3 years, 10 months)
FF13: December 17, 2009 (3 years, 9 months)
FF14: September 22, 2010 (9 months)

You can take this list however you want to take it, this does not include direct sequels or the spinoffs, just the main series as is atm.

As long as they aren't planning on making it annual, I am for this. The development time is too long at the moment, especially when the quality isn't necessarily all there.

This news somewhat frustrates me. Why can't Square Enix take a leaf out of Bethesda book with the Elder Scrolls series. Why do they feel the need to rush their development time. That have such an enviable IP in the RPG genre, they “should” just take their time to develop something special and lives up to the Final Fantasy dynasty. I am not saying any of the series are bad, but they risk making one that comes up short with this approach. Skyrim made an absolute ton on release and fans of the Elder Scrolls series show that they are willing to wait, just like we are.

I agree with several comments out there. I'd rather have quality, and I'm willing to wait. I just have a problem with them announcing titles super early, it makes the wait seem that much longer.

Well, to be fair, Final Fantasy XII\'s producer who also happened to be the director had to step down mid-production due to his health. And Final Fantasy XIII was originally planned for a PS2 release, but they waited for the PS3, then had to build everything around the PS3.

Quality will always beat quantity.

Except for money, I guess... which unfortunately is why they are taking that decision...

I say yay for short devolvement times buy nay for a yearly cycle. SE needs to make games ever year to gain profits from a business stand point. SE has Eidos to spit games out yearly but their games each year are from different franchises (Tomb Raider, Deus ex ect). SE needs to have a numbered title every two - three years and in-between make not so great spin-offs like Crystal Chronicles and Classic FF Ports/Remakes and expand on a ongoing series like Fabula Nova Crystallis.
