I think that sequels of games shouldn't be completely different because then you could just change the names of the main characters and it would be a entirely different game which at that point, what's the point of calling it a sequel at all? I hated how FFX and FFX-2 were way too different. If they are going to make a sequel to a game, I see no reason why it can't be the exact same function and gameplay but with an extended plot.
I played X-2 first, and was completely bewildered when I played X.
I wish Tidus had come back at the start of X-2, and the cast had remained the same as X (except for Auron, I guess). Most of the storyline would have still worked. They could have still done dresspheres. Imagine Tidus and Wakka as Songstresses? That said, the battle system in X relies on you changing characters all the time, and would have been boring with a 3-man band.
The only reason the battle system is being carried over here is because 1. they made a lot of changes and 2. they had dresspheres to start out with.

Aside from that, the frontend of the battle system is essentially the same. The differences come in when you start managing Paradigms and the Crystarium.
I'm glad to hear all of this, other than the slowdown problems of course.
There's been a lot of talk about "changing Paradigms on the fly", what does that mean? Is it just the lack of time-sucking animation when you change Paradigms?
