2K Games has just announced that Sid Meier's Civilization V, the latest entry in the long-running series, is currently under development. The Civilization franchise is known for its unique turn-based strategy system that uses actual history to progress the story. The franchise has sold millions of units worldwide and has garnered critical acclaim from reviewers and fans alike.
Civilization V uses a brand-new engine built from the ground up, using hexagonal tiles to allow for deeper strategy and more realistic gameplay. The game also includes fully animated leaders who interact with the player, speaking in the native tongue for the first time in the series. Players also have the ability to fire ranged attacks from behind the front lines, which adds a new facet to the tactics available in previous versions.
Multiplayer will also be present, as well as a suite of modding tools for those who wish to modify the game as they wish. Firaxis Games, who has developed prior games in the series, will be developing Civilization V. No release date was given for the title.
