It's hard to believe that The Sims came out on the 4th of February, 2000, but it's true. Since then, there have been three main titles and a plethora of spin-offs, which has seen the franchise amass sales of over 125 million units.

This has seen it become the best-selling PC game in most major markets and it doesn't look like they're going to rest on their laurels either. The Sims 3 came out last year, but there have also been other franchises, such as MySims, which have looked to capitalise on the appeal of this franchise.

According to EA, the franchise has generated more than $2.5 billion in revenue, ranking it higher than the Matrix Trilogy. There have also been real-world tie-is, such as H&M selling a garment designed by a player of The Sims.

Obviously people enjoy playing out their virtual lives much more than their actual lives.
