With the extreme linearity that recently released Final Fantasy XIII seems be most criticized for, fans of the franchise might be wondering if the other two titles in the Fabula Nova Crystallis compilation might suffer from the same fate.
In a panel at GDC, game director Motomu Toriyama revealed that the two games will indeed focus on "story-driven gameplay." Whether or not this means that Versus and Agito will be just as linear as Final Fantasy XIII remains rather vague at this point. Tetsuya Nomura, director and designer of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, had revealed at one point that the overworld would be making it's return in Versus, thus opening up avenues of exploration for the game.
Toriyama also stressed during the panel that Versus and Agito will be standalone titles and not sequels to Final Fantasy XIII. The only thing tying them together is the theme of peoples' fates being controlled by deities, dubbed as the "Crystal Mythos."
