Original Xbox Live continues to show signs of life long after the deadline Microsoft gave for discontinuing the service. This has been possible because of some extremely devoted, possibly too devoted, Halo 2 fans who have kept a single online match going for the past 12 days. Microsoft won't let any new matches begin or players to join any existing ones, however, if you were in a game when the lines were cut that game can stay up as long as people remain.
After 12 days the Halo 2 population has dwindled to just 14 players who have battled overheating consoles, and internet disconnections to keep their beloved game alive. One of those people posted a poetic last stand on the Bungie forums.
He said: "We will keep playing until we are all forcibly removed. It could be by Microsoft, Bungie, our Xbox's overheating, or just lagging out. Not for competition, not for a prize, but for the love, and memory of Halo 2. I want to thank everyone that I've played with in the past few days, this is by far my favorite memory in all my gaming history."
