EA's Need For Speed franchise is set for annual releases, switching up the dev teams every other year much like how Activision alternates Infinity Ward and Treyarch on the Call of Duty franchise.
Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit, which is out this month, is developed by Burnout bad boys Criterion. Next year's title, however, will be headed up by the devs up North in Canada, Black Box.
In addition, EA intends to make a proper series of Need for Speed: Shift, which caters to the same audience of Gran Turismo and Forza.
This shift in development strategy comes as a solution to previous strategy where developers had only eight to ten months to create a Need for Speed title. With multiple studios working on the franchise, EA will be able to continue to maintain their annual releases while giving developers more time to polish each title at the same time.
