THQ is planning to move away from licensed properties like SpongeBob SquarePants and focus more on its original IPs, like Red Faction and Darksiders.

The news was broken by THQ CEO Brian Farrel as he spoke at the Credit Suisse 2010 Technology Conference.

"We are curtailing some of our investments in the younger licensed products; those are the things that are not working as well as they used to," said Farrell.

"But the real win in the industry and for us is that we think there's significant value creation will come from owned IP like Homefront, like uDraw, like Red Faction, like Saint's Row," he continued.

This can only be seen as a good thing for core gamers, especially if they continue to produce products of the quality of Darksiders.
