It appears that From Software's Project Dark has been renamed to Dark Souls. The makers of the hardcore dungeon crawling PS3 RPG Demon's Souls revealed the official name in the latest issue of Famitsu along with a bit of information.
From Software is aiming to make the game as challenging as Demon's Souls as well as rewarding for players' efforts. As for gameplay, it'll be similar to Demon's Souls in that there will be plenty of trial and error involved.
Dark Souls will also feature a seamless experience. There will be no load screens and if you can see a location in the distance, you'll likely be able to get there eventually.
The game will not be using the same world setting as Demon's Souls. Instead, it's described to be its own world based on medieval dark fantasy with themes like "high fantasy of kings and knights...death and the depths of the earth," and "the flames of chaos."
Famitsu also notes that the character creation system will not be class-based, allowing for more freedom when creating your avatar. Online will be similar to Demon's Souls and you'll still be able to see dying messages left by other players. Features also allow for "mutual role-playing" between players, but details are currently hush-hush.
Stay tuned for more updates in the coming week.
