Motion capture is finally getting its due credit as the future of film and performance thanks to blockbuster hits like James Cameron's Avatar. However, developers in the video game industry already know this and Naughty Dog's Amy Hennig is confident that the creative studio is "ahead of the pack" when it comes to mocap technology.
"We've developed a unique process for motion capture and performance capture for games," said Hennig, creative director on the Uncharted series. "We're kind of ahead of the pack."
Hennig described the Dog's humble beginnings with Drake's Fortune, where performances were done on an outdated stage with rather terrible acoustics, forcing the studio to add in-game dialogue later.
However, with Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Naughty Dog upgraded to the House of Moves, giving the team access to better facilities, enabling them to capture both physical and vocal performances at the same time, something few studios were doing, but is now "quickly becoming the gold standard" for the gaming industry.
