Anyone who's seen Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, remembers it, and has played the Mass Effect games will probably have noticed some interesting similarities. From the omnitools to the holographic heads-up displays, armour design and even their ships.
Mass Effect 3's art director Derek Watts recently spoke on the matter, saying that he has indeed drawn 'a lot' of inspiration from the very first Final Fantasy movie despite it dropping one of the biggest bombs in box office history.
"Yeah, you know we actually reference a lot from Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. We used a lot of their GUIs and the way they did their ship - that was kind of like in some of the early designs for the Normandy," Watts said in the latest issue of Xbox World 360 magazine.
"Our attack helicopters are loosely based off that movie. There's some great stuff, especially their glowing GUI screens; we used those a lot. I keep a folder of that stuff and I still actually tell the guys 'just go back and look at that. Change it like that!'"
Fascinating, although not surprising that the one Final Fantasy title BioWare cites is easily the most sci-fi of them all. Go watch it again when you have the chance, I know I couldn't help but constantly see Captain Grey as Commander Shepard and the Deep Eyes as the Blue Suns.
