Despite a massive push by Sony, the new PlayStation Vita handheld has suffered a disastrous week with its predecessor the PSP outperforming it in the Japanese hardware chart.
Revealed Thursday, sales figures from Media Create suggested that the recently released Vita only managed to take fourth place. Worse still for the Vita, Media Create reported that the now seven-year-old PSP beat it, taking third place with combined sales of 62,746 - a clear run above the Vita's 42,648.
Above the two the PlayStation 3 took second, netting 67,199 sales, while Nintendo's 3DS ruled-the-roost, with combined sales approaching the 200,000 mark. Better still for Nintendo, the 3DS' Mario Kart 7 dominated the software chart, taking first place with 109,463 sales.
The news follows early reports that despite enjoying solid opening week sales, interest in the Vita had slowed, with sources reporting a massive 78 percent drop in units sold. Sony are yet to confirm Media Create's figures.
