Unity, the popular video game engine, is now offering its mobile tools for iOS and Android free for both small and independent studios. Unity also promises that the mobile tools for BlackBerry and Windows Phone 8 will available for free once Unity support is released.

While the Pro License will require a subscription fee, the software for iOS and Android that is for free would normally have a combined cost of $800. David Helgason, CEO of Unity Technologies, explained that this version of Unity is an extension of 2009's Unity Free. He also spoke on how Unity for the web and desktop computers was made free some time ago, but that they have wanted to do this for mobile gaming for quite some time.

Helgason also made sure to note that "companies and other 'incorporated entities'...with a turnover in excess of $100,000 in their previous fiscal year are required to use our paid version." For those who purchased these add-ons 30 days before they became free, you will receive discounts on future purchases.

By offering their software free of charge to "the little guy", you can bet that it won't be long before the mobile market is filled with more experimental titles.
