Microsoft confirmed to Digital Trends that their next console, Xbox One, will be region locked, which means, all software must match the region of the console itself.
A Microsoft spokesperson said to Digital Trends "Similar to the movie and music industry, games must meet country-specific regulatory guidelines before they are cleared for sale. We will continue to work with our partners to follow these guidelines with Xbox One."
This comes as no surprise, since Microsoft's previous consoles, Xbox and Xbox 360 were also region locked, although Microsoft currently allows studios to choose whether their games will work across regions on Xbox 360. Despite PS3, PSP and PS Vita being region free, with the exception of Persona 4 Arena, Sony has not yet confirmed whether or not the PS4 will be similarly region free.
