Moving away from the hustle and bustle of Final Fantasy XV, Square Enix is back to talking about its next major release from Japan, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.
This latest snippet comes from an interview that Yoshinori Kitase conducted with premier Japanese publication Famitsu. In the interview, Kitase was asked to describe the gameplay and his answer was rather interesting as he compared Lightning Returns to Dark Souls.
"If I were to describe the gameplay, I'd say that there are some elements with the severity of [something like] Dark Souls."
In some ways, it's easy to see what this quote is referencing. While battles in Lightning Returns won't contain the same free-flowing combat as Dark Souls, it does so away with the more structured approach of previous battle systems. For example, you no longer have to wait for your turn before attacking.
The more Square Enix disclose about Lightning Returns, the more it sounds like it won't be a game that suffers the same fate as Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII. Only time will tell though, and we have much more of that following Square Enix's decision to delay the Western release of the game. While Japanese gamers are scheduled to see the game this year, Western gamers won't see Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII until at least February next year.
